Milam County Tuberculosis Association mails Christmas Seal letters to residents as the final county campaign. A new tax funded program will take over TB testing and education by 1909 with the Texas Department of Health maintaining a state case register and district wide chest X rays. The TB group will become regionally organized with area directors and an emphasis on education.
About $3,000 in rifles pistols and ammunition were taken from W. T. Pearson & Sons Hardware in Rockdale Sunday night after a back window was forced open. A watch showcase was emptied but no other damage occurred. Sheriff Cacl Black said the thieves knew what they wanted. Fingerprints are being checked by the Department of Public Safety in Austin.
A light vote is predicted for Saturdays election on six constitutional amendments involving tax money. Milam County cast only three absentee ballots before the deadline. Polls will be open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Amendments cover general fund pooling, mental health and public health funding, Veterans Land bonds, sheriff and county employee medical bills, state park land bonds, and restrictions on holding multiple offices for officers and guards, with exemptions for some military personnel.
Water systems in Milam County boost property sales and prices in Cameron Rockdale Hearne Bryan and nearby towns. Henry Ivey of Farmers Home Administration notes buyers seek space for horses and livestock as new homes rise. Gause homes rise to new highs with seven building approvals pending and private financing planned. North Milam area including Ben Arnold and Burlington sees land selling at 200 per acre, up from 135. Expansion plans may add 120 subscribers to Yarrellton Marak Clarkson and north of Burlington as Branchville and Salem Flin Ridge push toward completion. County records show two new homes in Ben Arnold and more building activity tied to the water project.
A six member Milam County jury found Johnnie Stifflemire 19 of Houston and formerly San Gabriel guilty of firing a gun into a schoolhouse. Judge Harden imposed 100 and 56.60 costs with a two year probated sentence and 30 days already served. Jurors included Ben Hardie Mildred Thornton Alvin Herft Jerry Plachy Clarence Posey and Harry Tag.
Byron Neal, 70, longtime Milam County commissioner, died after months of illness in Rockdale. He served 18 years as county commissioner, was WWI veteran, survived by wife Ruth, a son Wayne and six grandchildren. Funeral at Phillips and Luckey with burial at OOF Cemetery.
City officials plan a Town Meeting at 7 p m Tuesday November 14 in First Methodist Fellowship Hall to discuss a proposed 1 percent city sales tax. The proposal aims to defer property tax increases and has support from multiple council members pending a January 1 deadline.
About 100 teenagers and parents attended a meeting for prospective members of the Katacomb Teen Club at the vacant East First Street center. Mrs. E. O. Schiller Jr. read the constitution and by laws as student leaders discussed plans. About 125 applications have been taken out. Cameron Public Schools teachers and parents sign them for enrolled students. Mark Meyer served as spokesman for the Teen Council organizing the club with adult help.
The Post Office Citizens National Bank and First National Bank will be closed Saturday November 1 in observance of Veterans Day.
Mrs. Judd G. Davis died at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Cameron Nursing Home at age 79. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Wirt Skinner officiating. Burial follows at Oak Hill Cemetery. She was born November 14, 1887 in Milam County. Survived by son John H. Davis of Cameron, daughter Gladys McCollum of La Porte, Texas, two grandchildren and one great grandchild. Marek Burns Funeral Home in charge.
Milbur and North Milbur fields in Milam and Burleson counties show renewed interest after Clark Oil Co and R E Smith No 1 E A Cotton spur a new wildcat trend. Geologists expect delta front sand bars along ancient Gulf coastline to extend nine miles and boost production if No 2 Cotton and other wildcats succeed.
