Cameron Oct 28 Many questions and false reports spread after councilmen voted to call an election to bring the city under Home Rule. The Daily Midget and Cameron Herald will publish series with viewpoints from university professors, other towns with charters, and local council members.
Miss Ann Virginia Winters named home economics supervisor for Lone Star Gas Company’s Waco Division. A native of Pearsall, she holds a B.S. in home economics from Texas Christian University and previously worked as a home economist in Temple. She will lead demonstrations, home visits, and appliance education, with colleagues Mrs. Beverly Jean Chancellor and Mrs. Jeanne D. Haarmeyer assisting in schools, clubs, and dealer programs.
Cameron Yeomen nipped Rockdale 13 to 12 on Tiger field in a defensive District 22-AA game. Jimmy Rettig's 70 yard TD and George Absnaider’s extra point backed by Leon Beale’s punting duel kept Cameron ahead as Rex McRae scored Rockdale’s two majors.
Ronald Hudson of Cameron presided at a Wesley Foundation program during the morning Methodist worship. Pastor Mark C. Magers noted the group reported on committees of Methodist students at the Wesley Center across from the campus. Their offering grew from 500 dollars five years ago to 5800, signaling foundation growth in College Station. The group plans church repairs and services at nearby churches.
Health officials report three cases of trench mouth in Milam County this week led by Dr. John B. Bryson. The county saw four prior cases with throat infections waning while trench mouth rises. Other reports include one pertussis case and two gonorrhea cases, with Cameron trade mentioned.
Post office urges immediate overseas mail for service personnel in Korea Japan and the Pacific Islands with deadlines: mail by November 1 to Korea Japan and Pacific areas. Europe and American territories before November 15. Cards by December 1 if with air mail or by November 15 for three cent stamps. Include full names ranks serial numbers and posting offices.
John Shelton of Val Verde died at home Tuesday at 5 30 a.m. of a heart attack. Funeral services set for Wednesday in Val Verde Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with burial in Friendship Cemetery. Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home of Rockdale directing. Survivors: wife Martha, one daughter. brother Everett Shelton. sisters Mrs Henry McCormick, Mrs R F Holder, Mrs William Bean.
The 1954 Texas Farm Bureau convention in Galveston November 8 to 10 will set official policy on state issues including acreage allotments price supports and the farmers cost-price squeeze. Delegates from about 180 counties will draft resolutions for next year’s government dealings and national issues will be recommended to the American Farm Bureau Federation.
Capt. Jack Blankenship of Buckholts led one of four C-119 Flying Boxcars on mercy missions from Ashiya Japan to flood struck Pakistan. The crew logged 220 mission hours over water and ferried a helicopter engine to Chittagong before using the planes as flying tank cars for 122 mile shuttle runs.
Private Debose 21, son of Mrs. Georgia A., 201 Scott St., Cameron, has arrived in Germany for duty with the 1st Infantry Division. The 1st Infantry, the only American division to stay in Europe since World War II, is noted in a continuing feature.
The 649th Anti aircraft Artillery Battalion was awarded a gold certificate for excellence in training during its annual Federal inspection on October 28. Colonel Wayne E. Brame of the Inspector General's Department at Fort Sam Houston presented the award and praised Battery C for maintaining a high training standard over the past two years.
Milam Theatre installs a new wide screen to show current favorites like The Robe and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Dean White says the theater will close until Thanksgiving and later resume a full week schedule with upgraded seating, carpet, and comfort features for patrons.
Bussell Wilson earned two honors. He was elected vice-president of the ex students association at a Belton homecoming banquet for the 1924 football team. He also received an invitation to attend the Baylor Texas game in Waco on November 6 to sit on the sidelines.
Wilbur M. Jones of Houston and John A. Sefcik of Cameron suffered lacerations when the Jones auto rear-ended the Sefcik pickup Friday afternoon. Charges filed against Sefcik for turning off onto the old Waco crossing road without signaling. Mrs. Jones received a leg abrasion. their daughter was uninjured.
State Highway Patrol investigated two Friday wrecks in Milano and Buckholts with no injuries. Charlie Taylor of Buckholts pulled onto Highway 19 from a side street and struck Frank Hagar of Holland, sending the Studebaker into a ditch and over. Alvie Blackman of Milano faced charges after William Mitchell of Houston allegedly pulled onto Highway 79 and struck Blackman in the left rear. Mrs Mitchell was taken to Cameron for a medical check, with no injury confirmation.
Sharp FFA from Sharp represented by Howard Pierce John Robert Caffey Barkley Garner Charles Schwarz and Bob Garner at the Rockdale Livestock Show October 29 30. Howard Pierce and John Robert Caffey entered two fat steer entries with Pierce taking first and fourth in Hereford and Caffey placing third in both fat steer and Shorthorn divisions. John Robert placed third in Shorthorn while Pierce earned Grand Champion in boys fat steer. Garlon Lawrence’s Guernsey heifer won a red ribbon in the diary division. Barkley Garner Charles Schwarz and Bob Garner showed gilts with no placings due to immaturity. Bob Garner won first and third in feeder pig division. Schwarz’s Duroc boar was second in the me nd di vision. In sow division Bob Garner’s Hampshire sow won first and later Grand Champion female, Schwarz took first in a Duroc sow.
Sergeant Verret Reynolds of Carceron completes the Ordnance Automotive School course in Wheel Vehicle Repair at Atlanta General Depot on October 20. Since 1941 about 65,900 men from around the world have trained at the School in eight Allied trade fields. He is the son of A. J. Reynolds of Route 2 Cameron.
Louis Groppell died Thursday at 3 30 p m in a Cameron hospital at age 92. A native of Washington County, he was a longtime Buckholts farmer. Funeral services were set for Friday October 29 at 2 30 p m at Hope Lutheran Church Buckholts with Rev John Pietscho officiating. Survivors include two sons Richard of Rogers and Alex of Cameron. five daughters Dora Haas Paul Sakowitz Alvie Fritz all of Buckholts Mrs Robert Baca of Rogers and Mrs William A Sells of Nacona. 19 grandchildren. Interment in Buckholts cemetery with grandsons as pallbearers.
Mrs. Bill Brown Mrs. Royland Lawson and Mrs. Charlie Duncan were business visitors in Temple Saturday.
