Cameron Lions Attend District Convention in Longview

Three Cameron Lions joined the District 2-X convention May 9 21 at Longview to elect Jack Dempsey Temple Lion as district governor. Narvie Caperton Burt Nicholson and Louis McKee attended the three day meeting where international Lion workers spoke on Lionism. McKee announced Cameron Lions Club has three children accepted for Kerrville camp this summer with A W McCullin leading the Lions Children's Camp committee.

Weather Notes Milam County Weekend Forecast Clear and Warm

Two showers last week added an inch of rain to the almost 21 inch total for the year. Weather cleared with temperatures in the low 90s. Continued clear and warm is forecast for the Milam County weekend.

VFW to Sell Buddy Poppies Saturday in Cameron

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2010 in Cameron will conduct its annual Buddy Poppy sale on June 1. Chairman H. B. McClellen notes the campaign began in 1922 and enjoys broad support from presidents, labor leaders, politicians, business figures, and religious leaders. Thousands of letters thank the effort for aiding veterans and their families.

McLane Named VP Of Grocers Group At 65th Convention

Drayton McLane of Cameron was elected vice president and member of the executive committee of the United States Wholesale Grocers Association at its 65th anniversary convention in New Orleans. The association, based in Washington DC, represents wholesale grocers serving restaurants, owner-operated stores, and supermarkets in 12 states plus Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada.

Marak Church Hosts Spring Festival Evening

St. Cyril and Methodius Church in Marak hosted a spring festival Sunday from 3 to 11 p.m. Parishioners welcomed Milam and Cameron residents to games and refreshments. A sausage and chicken supper was served at 5 p.m. Pastor Rev. R. Gerskovich spoke.

Two More Dogs Poisoned in Cameron City

Dogs owned by Mrs. G. Swift and Mrs. Sara Wilkerson were poisoned early this week, raising Cameron’s total to six. Two dogs died from strychnine while veterinarians saved two others. One dog was a 15 year old deaf and blind cocker spaniel. Previous poisonings occurred in east Cameron about three weeks earlier.

School Transfer Deadline Set

Saturday is the deadline for applications for student transfers to a school outside the district.

Four Stars Receive Honors at YHS Commencement

Four members of the 1957 You High School class received scholarships and diplomas at ceremonies held on the Yee High School Athletic Field. Valedictorian Franklin Moore earned three scholarships. Salutatorian Carol Ann Sanders Gloria Harber and Johnny Solomon received scholarships. Several top students spoke as the band played and the class song was sung.

Temple Police Officer to Transfer to Cameron Force

Joan Wilkinson, former Temple Police Department patrolman, will join the Cameron police force on June 1 and serve on night duty. He was chosen last week from nine entries, according to Chief Maynard Byers of The Herald. His resignation from Temple becomes effective June 1.

Milam County Receives $8574 for Flood Loss Damages

Milam County has been awarded 8574 from the U S Public Health Service to cover flood related damages from late April and early May. Funds will support insect control well chlorination of flooded wells and sewerage system repairs in Cameron Rockdale Thorndale and rural Milam County. Cameron’s Poultry Leader Leo Fuchs Named Citizen of the Month

The Cameron Chamber of Commerce and Herald honor Leo Fuchs as Citizen of the Month for his long served work on the chamber poultry committee. He helped grow the annual Broiler Show from 21 entries in 1954 to 100 and once reached 125. Brady credits Fuchs for key show ideas and national coverage followed in Checker Guide and The Broiler Grower. Fuchs and Brady will appear on KWTX TV to discuss the show.

Cameron Country Club Women s Invitational attracts 76 players

The first annual Cameron Country Club Women s Invitational drew 76 golfers who teed off at 8 30 am and dined at 3 pm after awards were presented by general chair Mrs Ray Lester. Winners included multiple contestants from Austin, Waco, Cameron, Fort Hood, and surrounding towns across several flight categories.

Air Force Officer C D Mode Cited for Missile Work at Eglin

Captain Clayton D Mode received a Meritorious Achievement citation for work as Project Officer on the GARI Missile Employment and Suitability Test. He designed an improved pallet, enabling full testing and final procurement, saving about three quarters of a million dollars. Born in Cameron, he attended Yee High School and began service in 1949.

Chamber Secretary to Attend State Convention

Miss Jan Spear secretary of the Cameron Chamber of Commerce will leave for Mineral Wells Sunday to attend the state Chamber of Commerce Managers Convention. Ben Magness president said arrangements have been made to send her to Mineral Wells and pay her expenses for the three day meeting.

Summer hours set by Cameron Library Board

The Cameron Library Board announces new summer hours from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays. Former HD Agent Returns From Iraq After Two Years

Miss Bertha Fae Strange, former Milam County home demonstration agent (1933-37), returns from a two-year Iraq stint with the International Co-Operation Administration. She expects her next ICA assignment to Korea, but will attend a national Home Economics Convention in St. Louis in June. She previously taught at Arizona State College and spent 13 years with Hawaii's Department of Agriculture.

Milam County Extends Cotton Planting Deadline to June 10

County Agent J D Moore says the cotton planting deadline is extended by the state agriculture commission to June 10 due to rains. Milam County is allotted 4500 acres for cotton with potential yields that could rival pre drought levels if weather remains favorable.
