Thorndale tops county in National Defense Bond sales as Emory A Camp releases weekly figures. Since May 20, county totals show several small towns contributing modest amounts to the defense bond drive.
Max Schmeling former heavyweight champion of the world was killed in Crete early Thursday while attempting to escape from a prison camp. He reportedly leaped from a parachute into captivity and seized a gun from a wounded guard before being shot by a guard at the camp entrance.
Attorney General Gerald C. Mann was to speak at 2 15 p m on Thursday May 29 in Cameron but postponed due to a death in his Austin department. All arrangements were set and a new date will be announced later.
Anthony Eden, in London, states Britain seeks peace terms to preclude any future German aggression while Berlin brands Roosevelt and Eden as insults. The Crete fighting continues with British reinforcements reported and 52000 tons of supplies sunk bound for Britain. Roosevelt announces extended naval patrol.
Cameron friends praise the three local graduates from Seton School of Nursing in Austin. Miss Elvira Schiller of Buckholts, Miss Theresa Matocha and Miss Magdalen Michalka, both of Cameron, form the Senior Class of 18. All are Yoe High School alumni.
Congressman Poage says he cannot answer every letter about convoy use but values reader input. He notes Americans split on policy with honest views on both sides and condemns subversive un American elements urging foreign friendly policies. He affirms respect for constituents and commitment to protecting the country.
M V Hollman vocational agriculture teacher at Sharp High School proposed forming a Defense Council for Milam County. He urged immediate local action after Civilian Defense was authorized. A Cameron meeting may be called to discuss organizing councils on city community or county levels. Roosevelt says every citizen will share in the national emergency.
Funeral services for Miss Louise Muske 84 who died at the home of her niece Mrs L F Gohmert were held at Marek Burns Funeral Home. Born August 27 1857 in Waller County she lived with the Gohmerts for 23 years. Survived by sister Mrs G W Buller brothers Hub and Alex Muske of Brookshire. Interment in Brookshire Cemetery planned Friday May 30.
L. L. Blaylock longtime Milam county sheriff and later Comptroller's Department worker in Austin is critically ill at his Cameron home after months of illness. He suffered a heart ailment Sunday and was in a coma Monday. Leonard Blaylock Jr. of the FBI was notified, two sisters visited him.
William Pruett of Cavilla spent a Saturday as a visitor in Cameron, sharing time with locals and enjoying the day in the city.
The German battleship Bismarck, 35 000 tons, was sunk about 300 miles off Brest after a chase by British ships and American Catalina bombers. All hands were lost. The Hood was also sunk in the engagement.
Joseph Laverne Rutherford was found guilty of simple assault and fined $10 by a district court jury. The kidnapping charge was filed by the criminal district attorney on the advice of the state’s attorney. Rutherford was represented by Camp & Camp of Cameron and Rockdale.
E Brogdon qualified for the 37th annual Southwestern Life Insurance Agency Convention to be held in Galveston Texas June 5 6 and 3 with more than 400 attendees expected including 220 agents wives and company officials. Convention highlights include business discussions on life underwriting and the annual banquet with prizes. headquarters at the Buccaneer Hotel and Hotel Galvez.
Reported losses say six thousand German troops died in Crete waters as British ships struck a convoy and as German submarines and dive bombers hindered rescues. Britain reportedly lost its largest cruiser and claimed sunk British destroyers and cruisers while air superiority remained with Germany.
British and Greek troops evacuated Crete after Greece fell as German air forces tightened. Berlin and Washington weigh Roosevelt moves while Egypt and the Suez zone face looming conflict. German gains in Egypt and a looming Suez assault appear likely as Allied production unity is urged.
R. P. Red Schigut was severely hurt Tuesday night near Port Arthur when a truck overturned after wheels slipped from the pavement. Driver Owen Weems was not severely injured. Schigut suffered a broken collar bone and cuts and bruises and was taken to a Houston hospital.
Mr and Mrs F C Fahrendorf will host a dance for the Senior graduates at the Country Club on Friday night May 30 following the commencement exercises. All Seniors their dates and parents are invited with pleasure noted by the graduates.
Mr and Mrs E L McGregor announce the birth of a baby girl Wednesday night. The mother and child are reported progressing well as relatives offer congratulations.
C M Beard of Milano made a Cameron visit on Saturday, engaging in local affairs and meeting residents during the daytime appearance.
Giles S Summerlin 72 died at his Thorndale home after a year of declining health. A retired businessman and first mayor of Thorn Dale, he was active in civic affairs in Milam County. Survived by widow Lucy Peebles, seven children, 11 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren, funeral Sunday at 5 p m from the family residence with Rev R L Stephens. Burial in Thorndale City Cemetery.
Mrs. Annie Kovar died at her home at 3 p.m. May 28. Funeral services proceed from Marek-Bruns Funeral Home at 8:30 Sunday morning May 26 with Mass at St. Monica's Church at 9:00 led by Rev. George J. Duda. Interment in Catholic cemetery. Many relatives expected. Marek-Burns Funeral Home directing arrangements.
City Marshal Gene Smith jailed four men after they entered City Cafe and demanded beer. A knife was drawn and Wallace claimed the assailant threatened to cut off his head before Ott Story pulled the attacker out. The group was arrested nearby and faces charges.
The U S Air Corps offers 100 mechanic vacancies at March and Hamilton Fields in California. Applicants require an eighth grade education. See L Van Perkins for details. Mead Miller of Temple visited Cameron on business Monday. Irene Rouse spent the weekend in Hearne with relatives.
Mrs Mildred Petty of Sharp visited Cameron on Saturday, as recorded in local social notes.
Constable Elimar Horstmann of Buckholts made a business visit in Cameron on Saturday. He met local officials and discussed regional matters during the outing.
