Sealed bids for the Richards Memorial Hospital project will be opened publicly June 14 at 2 p.m. in the Rockdale State Bank community room. The process follows weeks of work with architect George L. Dahl, Inc of Dallas and aims to sign a contractor by late June.
The Texas A&M University system won approval from the Coordinating Board in Dallas to create a new medical education program in Temple. Veterans hospitals in Temple Waco and Marlin will help train medical manpower to ease shortages inside and outside the VA.
McGregor and Waco are headed to court late in June over a dispute on McGregor's extension of city limits to include McGregor Airport. Waco argued the move was invalid while a McGregor compromise proposal was ignored by Waco officials.
Waco city council approved a final urban renewal project as requested by the urban renewal director. The area covers East Waco around the Paul Quinn neighborhood and extends along Elm Street in Clifton and nearby lands.
An initial accident at Somerville High led to a second collision as a car rushing to fetch a doctor for a student in a PE class hit another vehicle. The student, struck while trying to catch a football pass, was hospitalized with a concussion and mouth lacerations, while no injuries occurred in the second crash.
Rosamond McClain, wife of a Georgetown attorney, challenged the County Commissioners Court to grow with its expanded duties and urged allocation of Federal Revenue Funds to humanitarian aims. She spoke at the latest meeting in a failed bid to restore Head Start and Family Planning programs once funded by OEO.
Lester Glass won a 1973 Ford Maverick in a fundraiser tied to the Rosebud spring concert on May 18. The drive raised over $6,325 toward new band uniforms with more than $8,000 in car tickets sold. A benefit dance yielded over $100 and a volleyball tournament at Lott brought in over $600 plus private donations.
Cameron's fourth annual Folk Fete begins with a coronation pageant at 8 p m on Thursday June 7 in the Methodist Fellowship Hall. Entrants ages 15 to 19 will model sports wear and dresses and be judged on poise grooming and personality. Gail Ging the 1972 queen will crown the winner.
Two Texas School for the Deaf houseparents will retire the first week in June after years of mothering 17 to 24 children annually. Evelyn Hearne, longtime Valley cottages matron from Ben Arnold, leaves June 1 awards in Austin. Annie Obermiller of Buckholts also retires.
Milam County REACT Club sponsors a Memorial Day weekend rest stop two miles south of Cameron on Highway 36. The stop runs from 5 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday May 28 to offer a free wake-break from holiday driving hazards.
Richard Raymond 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Raymond of Cameron, joined Eagle Scout ranks in ceremonies at All Saints Episcopal Church. Troop 791 members and district Scout executive Ron Derry attended. Richard advanced from Tenderfoot in 3 years, serving as senior patrol leader and holding prior roles. He completed leadership training and joined the Order of the Arrow.
