The piece laments missing veterans on Memorial Day while urging national unity and teaching patriotism to youth. It notes June as the month of roses, cites quotations on roses, and warns against uprooting flowering plants for advertising and display, arguing ads lower costs by spreading overhead across many items.
The Edwards line well on Dr. W R Newton Jr. farm three and a half miles west of Cameron will spud Sunday afternoon with J B Kilgore of Waco supervising drilling. Acreage blocked by Jim Sampson transferred to Kilgore associates. Crawford of Dallas mapped the location. Kilgore predicts oil potential from this site following a nearby Marak field showing. Cameron area draws renewed attention to the test.
Sam Hohenstein geologist and oil scout works in Cameron blocking acreage on the Posey oil well area and will submit recommendations for a drilling contract with Oklahoma interests. He says Posey was east of the fault and proposes locating west in the bend of Little River. maps near completion and acreage for the test is well blocked up.
T A Howell cables from Del Rio to reveal a visit with his son Jay D Howell of the Texas Highway Department stationed in the border city. He notes a joyful trip and reports returning from Mexico as a postcard image depicts Judge Roy Bean’s Jersey Lilly at Langtry and the historic Big Bend shows.
Senator W. R. Poage of Waco candidate for Congress will deliver his first campaign address of the year in Rockdale on Saturday at 4 p m, announced here Tuesday.
Fred Matthews, paroled from a Texas prison, was returned to Huntsville after a Marshall arrest for gasoline theft. Sheriff R M Kennedy, with Ranger accompaniment, delivered Matthews in Austin at the Ranger chief’s request. Matthews, a murder convict in Cameron, had fled Buckholts and allegedly stole a car from Rosebud druggist Bob McCoy, driving it 11,000 miles.
Special observer R A Tag notes 1935 May rainfall of 10.24 inches with 13 days at or near .05 and a 37 foot Little River rise on May 19. Through May 30 1936 totals 11.76 inches, while 1935 reached 17.34 inches by the same date.
Memorial Day closing announced for Cameron postoffice. J. R. Hays postmaster says May 30th is a national holiday with no rural or city delivery and the last business day of the month, so patrons should plan accordingly.
A church schedules White Sunday on May 31 with Holy Communion and a sermon at 9 A.M. The service invites parishioners to attend and participate in the liturgy and message.
Aged Confederate A S Moseley 92 last Civil War veteran in Cameron died Saturday night May 23 1934 at 11 oclock. Born July 22 1844 in Henry County Georgia he joined the 14th Mississippi Independent Scout Cavalry at 17 and fought across Mississippi Tennessee and Dalton. He lived in Cameron since 1903 and will be buried Monday.
Yee High School announces 1986 senior honors with Thomas Jefferson White as Valedictorian and Miss Gertrude Boedeker as Salutatorian. White earned high averages and the American Legion Medal for scholarship across his schooling.
Cameron Exes at Texas U John Watson seen at the Reserve Library Friday night. Frances Tucker seen at Barton Springs Tuesday to sunbathe. She will receive her B A degree in June. Mary Newton visited Llano at the home of Mr and Mrs Fred Lange. Helen Flinn will receive her M A in English in June. Roy Baskin elected secretary of Pre Medical fraternity. Katherine Atkinson to receive M A in June. Exams approach with worry and vacation ahead. Mrs B P Atkinson entertained with informal tea Sunday at her home. The quote about a man’s measure based on money remains noted.
Horstmann of Buckholts says he will run for constable of Precinct No 6. He has served as an Buckholm officer for many years and will issue a full announcement next week.
Arthur Altwein faces murder charges in the shooting of his brother Joe Altwein during a fishing party at Fulcher Bluff on the San Gabriel river in Milam County. Joe died at a Temple hospital. Arthur, 27, was arrested soon after the incident. Defense lawyers Roy Baskin and Ed Gunn represent the defendant. Emory B. Camp is the prosecuting attorney. One hundred jurors have been summoned for the trial.
Five and a half inches of rain drenched Cameron from Friday to Tuesday morning. Highways 14 and 3 two miles east are impassable due to Little River overflow. Observers expect the river to recede by Thursday if rainfall stops. Roads have been closed since Sunday. trucks were towing cars Wednesday as the river rose slowly.
Graduation exercises for the Ada Henderson Grammar School will be held at Yee High Athletic Field on Friday night May 29 at 8 o clock. Miss Irma Porter principal announces the program with Diane Luckett named Valedictorian and Lucille McDermott Salutatorian. The program includes Cameron Band numbers, a concert procession, and a Pep Address, with diplomas awarded by the American Legion Medal group.
Raby Hill, serving 99 years for killing George Richards, a night policeman, earns a new trial after the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reverses and remands the case to Milam County. The reversal cites jury room conduct. bond remains unavailable as he stays jailed awaiting decision on local retrial venue.
Larry Mitchell held for drunken driving and one of two jail escapees remained at large after the break at 10 oclock Wednesday night. Roy Price, accused of cattle theft and then recaptured near Gause, said the cell bars had been sawed and plugged with soap. Sheriff Kennedy blocked further escapes.
The Band Parent Organization met Monday night at Yee High School with president W. B. Skelton presiding. They discussed fundraising for new band uniforms and planned a Halloween carnival in October. Ruth Hobson will be crowned band sweetheart, with participants from other towns invited. A Lions Club minstrel and canvassing of band parents for uniform funds were also discussed.
Oliver's Radio Shop in Buckholts introduces the Crosley electric refrigerator to the community. Mr Oliver also sells and services Crosley radios and has already sold several refrigerators to local customers.
The Shirley Temple film Captain January comes to Cameron Theatre for Sunday and Monday May 1 and June 2. The story follows a loving sailor who rescues a tiny waif, forming a protective bond as they navigate a lighthouse coastal Maine setting.
