Cameron library planning board meeting May 31 at Methodist Hall

The Cameron Library Planning Board will meet 7:30 P.M. Wednesday May 31 at First Methodist Fellowship Hall to review building, publicity, and out-of-town donation plans. E. A. Perrin reports committee chairmen will present recommendations from the building, publicity, and donations groups. The board discusses a site on East Fourth Street and broad participatory representation from local groups. A senatorial election with expected light turnout begins statewide at 7 A.M. Saturday with polling at 38 Milam precincts including Rockdale and Cameron.

Western Week plans and Texas Senate race notes

Science Award Given Miss Reid For VHS Work

Miss Helen Reid of Yee High School is named outstanding science student and will receive a slide rule from the Texas Chemical Council. She has completed science and mathematics courses, earned honors, led activities, played oboe, served on Student Council and yearbook staff, and participated in science fairs, debates, and theater. After graduation she plans to attend Texas Woman's University.

4-H May Festival Showcases Milam County Youth Achievements

Milam County 4 H Clubbers held their Annual May Day Festival and Achievement Program at Rockdale Fair Park. The event featured demonstrations skits and a dress revue with 27 girls competing Valera Green from Gause won first place Joyce Malone second and Francis Moore third. Awards also went to top placers in the County Swine Program including K Williams Cavilla Rodger Petty Jones Prairie Kinnard Williams Jones Prairie Dwight Schaffer Jones Prairie and Earnest Laury Jones Prairie. Receipts at the Central Texas Hog Marketing Association Sale last week totaled 95 head with top bids at 16 75 per hundred.

Cameron City Remodels Fronts and Renovations

Remodeling in Cameron includes two stores Milam Theatre and Duke Ayres receive new glass fronts. Milam Theatre gets a new front, lobby repaint, and plans for seating and interior redecoration. Other projects cover Varity stores, First Baptist Church Sanctuary, Newton Memorial Hospital, and Citizens National Drive-In Bank paving.

Cameron School Board Discusses Summer School Plans

Cameron School Board discussed Yee High School summer school courses including special education. The board voted 5-1 not to renew Coach Wallace Johnson’s contract, with F W Vogelsang voting for renewal and four others against. They also set a special committee to size a new school bus for 1961-62 and rehired auxiliary personnel. A district audit report is expected. The Virgo Richards Reunion will be held June 4 at Cameron Park.

Hajovsky Elected Bowling President

Albert Hajovsky was elected president of the Men's Summer Bowling League in a meeting held Monday night. Thomas Gilliland of Rockdale was elected vice president and Eric Norwood of Rockdale was elected secretary treasurer. Fight teams of four men each have been organized and bowling will begin Wednesday. The teams will bowl for fourteen weeks.

Kenya Ag Leader Visits Cameron and Milam County

Clement K. Gachie, 44, an assistant agriculture officer from Kenya, visits Cameron and Milam County under the International Cooperation Administration. He tours Milam farm facilities with County Agent E. K. Shaw and studies U S mechanization, dairy, soils, beef feeding, and youth work. He plans two weeks in Cameron, a Prairie View Extension course, then two more weeks, and aims to replicate mechanization and self sufficiency in Kenya.

Moore Named District Director for District 3 Extension

J. D. Moore of Milam County serves as director of District 3 Extension agents. District 8 covers 20 counties with 20 county agents and six assistants. The District 8 association links with the State County Agents Association of 12 districts. Moore holds bachelor and master degrees from A&M College. The group emphasizes professional improvement through awards, retirement plans, and closer ties with state colleges and experiment station research aligned to local needs.

60 Pre Schoolers Enroll At Ben Milam

Approximately 60 pre first graders were enrolled for the fall semester at Ben Milam School last Thursday and Friday according to principal Max McClaren. Unenrolled students may enroll in August or at the Superintendent’s office. Parents must bring birth certificate and small pox vaccination records.

Milam County Farm Bureau to Stage Queen Contests July 20

The Milam County Farm Bureau will hold junior and senior queen contests July 20 in First Methodist Fellowship Hall Cameron. First 12 entrants in each division, ages 3 to 6 for juniors and 16 to 22 for seniors, qualify. Winners receive a Black Angus calf and a silver pot. entry deadline July 5. Judge panel includes out of county officials and Johnny Watkins of KWTX-TV as MC.

The Cameron Public Library, under librarian Mrs. Tom Wardlaw, sets summer hours starting June 1. Tuesdays to Fridays open 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Mondays closed.
