The Herald congratulates the 1961 seniors in the fifth annual Graduation Section with best wishes from Cameron and Milam business interests. It reflects on high school achievements as a beginning and urges humor, goals, and future work in the adult community. It notes the need to find purpose and highlights the future’s challenges and opportunities.
Yee High School coach Billy Bates outlined a weight lifting program to the Lions Club. With Thomas Leonard Ernest Bayer and Bobby Hillman the plan was demonstrated. Started in January it has yielded an average 12 pound gain per student and aims to boost strength performance and reduce injuries in contact sports.
The State Highway Commission announced that Harry Newton, Inc. won the 9.2 mile U S Highway 77 project in Milam County with a bid of 982,982 dollars. The job covers grading, foundations, base and asphalt pavement from UW Soamd to Lee County line and is to take 275 working days under District Highway Engineer C B Thames. Carol D Zeigler will supervise during construction. Will Bishop and family visited relatives in Houston over the weekend.
Three special summer school courses begin Monday in Cameron Schools. Driver education will run for two weeks at Yee High School with two 90 minute periods each Monday. A pre school program for non English speaking children operates with Rosebud and Cameron, including a bus route from Cameron Housing Project. High school courses for students from other districts may run in two separate four hour morning sessions, with tuition of 17.50 per semester and a minimum of about 15 students to start.
Milam County voters favored Democrat Blakley 1624 to 714 in a countywide special election while majority rural precincts backed Republican Tower for the Senate seat. Across 70 Texas counties large precincts in Rockdale Cameron Thorndale Buckholts Milano split about 60 percent for Blakley or Tower, with Cameron No. 1 and No. 2 showing mixed results. Tower led statewide by about 8,000 votes as early returns totaled roughly 445,000 for Tower and 437,900 for Blakley.
State patrol logged three accidents in early week with eight people hurt and no fatalities. A six person car crash near Cavilla on Val Verde road injured six including driver Joe Quintero and his family. five released after treatment, one with fractures remained. A separate collision south of Cameron on SH 36 involved Pedro Floris and Rosie Floris with a broken jaw. A Missouri Pacific freight train hit a stalled car near Rockdale injuring a 76 year old woman. Construction continued at Cameron sites including Duke and Ayres Variety Store where a six week remodel moved into its second week with new fixtures and a front canopy. At First Baptist Church the column and spire work neared interior fixture installation while Newton Memorial Hospital prepared paving and interior features. Burke's Variety Store added gray aluminum front trim, Milam Theatre anticipated new seating, and Ted Kuehl's Barbershop refreshed the front with new canopies.
Obie Mack and Gilbert Cook pled guilty in Milam District Court. Mack received a three year sentence for assault with malice and a parallel three year term for assault with malice to murder, to run concurrently, while Cook got a two year burglary sentence with credit for time served. Judge W C Wallace presided. trials were nonjury.
General rains reached Cameron and surrounding counties with up to 2 inches north of the area and lighter amounts in Cameron itself. County Agent J. D. Moore notes feed crops were saved, but Milam County corn could drop 35 to 50 percent due to April May drought. Cotton planting continues late while grass for cattle remains delayed and hay crops face a 50 percent reduction amid grasshopper pressure. Cameron received .17 inch last Thursday and .03 inch Friday with temperatures 91 high and 51 low.
Tejas District announces Scouters Night a combined monthly meeting of District Committee and Cub and Boy Scout Roundtable on Monday June 12 at the Methodist Church. Tom Gaither Neighborhood Commissioner Rosebud will conduct Cub Scout Roundtable and Rev. John McCord Presbyterian Pastor and Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 58 Lott will lead Boy Scout Roundtable.
Jerry and Milton Schiller co owners of Cameron's 7-eleven store Schiller Motors and Schiller's Humble Service Station celebrate ten years in business. An all day open house at the station offers refreshments souvenirs and perfume with guest registrations for prizes such as tires gasoline oil and miniature oil wells.
A Milam District petit jury will be selected Monday at 9 a.m. to hear the murder trial of Hubert W. Shuffield 66 of Cameron. He is charged with murder with malice in the shooting death of Jesse Kirk Jr 44 found shot April 14 in Shuffield's cafe. Shuffield pleaded not guilty May 8.
Cameron Library Planning Commission and 23 local groups met to review site plans on E Fourth Street near a city park, discuss donation sizing terminology, and outline fundraising outreach to out of county donors. The two year site-use limit and UT Library Science guidance influenced the building committee’s recommendations.
Temperatures ranged from 51 to 91 degrees over the past week. Rainfall included .17 inch on the 25th and .03 inch on the 26th. May temperatures show highs near 87 to 89 degrees with nightly lows around the low 60s.
Senior Girl Scouts of the Texas Colorado Lakes Council were chosen to join the National Purpose Project by the National Recreation Association with Life Magazine funding. Fifteen to twenty girls will discuss four themes including the Nation’s purpose with political and economic systems, human relations, and world responsibility. The first session occurs July 8 during Camp Texlake’s second session. the council covers eighteen Central Texas counties with HQ in Austin.
