Cameron Theatre opens a week of grand entertainment starting Sunday with The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle featuring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The schedule includes One Third of a Nation with Sylvia Sidney and Lief Erickson, You Cant Cheat an Honest Man with W C Fields, Society Lawyer starring Leo Carrillo Virginia Bruce and Walter Pidgeon, Within the Law with Paul Kelley and Lynn Carver, and King of the Turf featuring Adolphe Menjou and Dolores Costello.
Virginia Humbles of Cameron, formerly of Yoe High School Cam ero, graduates from Temple High School in 1980 with the highest average in Temple history. She carried a 99 38 percent average and earned first in the state Latin tournament. Graduation exercises are set for Thursday night May 7.
Chancellor Commander John W. Haygood calls a special meeting for Friday night May 26 inviting all officers and new members to review their work with instructors present. At the May 20 regular meeting the Rank of Knight will be conferred.
Mayor Charles C. Smith issues a cleanup proclamation for a five day period starting Monday May 29. City trucks will aid owners by hauling trash to dump grounds. He warns this season demands mosquito control and urges residents to fix conditions on their property to prevent summer plagues.
Harold Pressley, 1989 high school honor graduate and valedictorian, was named the first annual Rotary Club gold wrist watch award winner at Yee High School. The ceremony featured R. H. Brister and Dr. Clifford Swift as speakers, with Swift praising Pressley for outstanding student life.
Milam County farmers could gain roughly 912000 in farm program payments by full participation. About 607000 would come from Conservation payments for soil conservation practices and terracing. The remaining 406000 stems from parity or price adjustment payments on cotton and wheat.
Soil conservation checks totaling 90000 have been received at the county agent's office in the past ten days. Guy Hartgraves announces 3801 checks totaling 850483 have been received in Milan county. State offices work to clear suspended applications and multiple farm holdings quickly. More checks expected at the local office.
Mrs. George Beard and C M Beard of Milano were Cameron visitors during the week, spending time with local friends and taking in area sights.
The Milam county commissioners award Emory B Camp a twenty month contract to collect delinquent taxes. Camp will receive 13 percent of taxes paid, with four workers including Charles C Smith Jr and others in Cameron. About 150 thousand dollars in unpaid taxes remain, and camp plans to mail notices soon, with receipts and record clearance key tasks.
