Skelton Returns From Hospital

W. B. Skelton has returned home after a week in a Temple hospital with encephalitis. He must remain in bed for several days and isolation is required during his convalescence. Family asks friends not to visit.

Baccalaureate Service Set For May 28 At Yee High Field

Baccalaureate for the 1939 graduates will be held Sunday at Yee High Athletic Field. Dr. D R Lindley of Central Christian Church San Antonio will deliver the address. The program includes music by Yee High School Band and soloists, prayers by local pastors, Bible reading, hymns, and a sermon by Lindley. Approximately 112 candidates are expected to participate.

Mrs L L Albertson Buried in Cameron

Mrs. L L Albertson, 63, of Cameron died at a local hospital after a short illness. Funeral services were held at First Christian church with Rev. Maurice Grove officiating. She was born in Rockdale and taught there. survived by husband, two Cameron sons, and daughter Elizabeth Wadell of Houston. Interment in Rockdale cemetery. Green's Funeral Home directed. Pallbearers listed.

Francis Cox Receives Baylor University Scholarship

Francis Cox, director of the Yee High School Band, is awarded a Baylor University scholarship for the 1939 summer quarter based on his scholastic record. The grant covers half tuition and expenses, one of four such awards. Cox has not yet fixed plans for attending during the summer.

Milano Man Receives Five-Day Jail and Fines

CG. C. Porter of Milano was sentenced to five days in jail and fined fifty dollars with license suspension for six months on a charge of operating his car while intoxicated.

Milam County Gains $834,339 from Bond Fund Plan

Milam County is projected to receive about 834000 dollars over twenty five years under the County Road Bond Assumption Bill now in the Senate. The plan reallocates the County Road Indebtedness Fund surplus to counties for retiring road bonds or building new lateral roads.

Fine berries grown near city limits by Jon Kocurek

The Herald reports very fine Poysen berries this week grown by Jon Kocurek whose farm lies at the northern city edge. The berries, imported from California, are thriving under his care and the paper plans a fuller description of his efforts soon.

Yee High School Commencement Slated for May 29

Commencement exercises for Yee High School graduates will be held on the athletic field Monday night May 29. Full details will be printed in the next Herald edition.

A CCC call is expected in early July. Applicants may file at the Relief Office in Cameron or Rockdale.

Court confirms swap of sheriff and school office sites

The commissioners reaffirmed the plan to move the sheriff's office to the second floor beside the courtroom and place the county superintendent on the ground floor in the former sheriff area. A protest petition circulated countywide was presented but rejected. Both officials had supported the exchange as mutually beneficial.

Wallace Named City Attorney by Mayor Smith

W. C. Bill Wallace was appointed City Attorney for an unexpired term by Mayor Chas. C. Smith on Tuesday night. He is a partner in Wallace & Wallace with his father, a Highland area alumnus who studied law at Rice and Harvard after finishing local high school.

Silver Grill Owner Pleads Guilty in Liquor Sale Case

Jack Owings Sr owner of the Silver Grill in Cameron pleaded guilty to selling liquor on Sunday. He paid a $150 fine and $28 costs in Cause No 6799. Bert Ford of the Texas Liquor Board said an order suspending the license for seven days would take effect soon. If future conduct remains improper the license may be cancelled. Judge Jeff T. Kemp accepted the fine under a board agreement. Dance hall cafes with beer bars and liquor have caused widespread problems, with license cancellations in over 1000 Texas cases.

Yee High Band Tour and Abilene Contest Triumph

Members of the Yee High School Band were guests of Stanley Swift at Swift Theatres to view Dodge City. The Band Parents Association held its annual park barbecue for band members in City Park. Francis Cox, band director, attended as a guest in recognition of the recent national contest triumph at Abilene.

Court House Will Be Ready Saturday

Fire damaged the Lyon Livy Goods building near the federal building after a gasoline stove exploded in a cream testing room. Greene Hoedeker stores moved fixtures to a new location and plan to reopen Monday. Reconstruction began November 25, 1938 with McClellan Brown McClellan of Waco directing the work.

Negro Girl Under Arrest In Stabbing Of White Boy

Geraldine Carter an 18 year old Negro girl was placed under arrest by Sheriff R. M. Kennedy and Constable B. F. Bailey after the near fatal stabbing of Woodrow Wilson a former high school student hero and son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Wilson. The attack happened Saturday night on a sidewalk near the Bluebonnet Cafe. Carter said she stabbed Wilson after he bumped into her and dropped her handkerchief and gum while she expressed indignation.

Watkins Surrenders After Court Conviction in Central Texas

Rockdale mayor E A Camp accepts surrender from Jack Watkins a convicted habitual criminal serving a life term who escaped Madisonville jail on May 6. Watkins said he feared being shot as officers pursued him. A 1939 Chevrolet stolen in Anderson was found near Little Flock Church two miles west of Maysfield. Watkins had prior Milam county burglary convictions in 1928 and 1935.
