Yeeman Chant earns state journalism honor in first year

The Yeeman Chant of Yee High School won an Award of Merit in Journalism from the Interscholastic League Press Conference for high standards in its first year of producing a bi monthly newspaper. Editor Margaret Nance and sponsor Mrs. M Louise Green led a dedicated staff acknowledged by The Herald in its sixth annual seniors feature.

Area schools schedule end of year rites with baccalaureate services at Yoe High School and Milano High School. Yoe holds baccalaureate May 27 and commencement May 29 with eighth grade graduation at 9 a m. Milano hosts baccalaureate May 2 and graduation May 28 at the listed church and gym venues. Milam Farm Bureau Announces Queen Contest Plans

Milam County Farm Bureau reveals a queen and junior queen pageant set for July 12 at First Methodist Fellowship Hall. Adults compete July 12 with 16 to 22 entrants. juniors 3 to 6 entrants. Entry deadline July 2. District winner earns watch and trip to Texas Farm Bureau event. Contestants must be daughter or sister of a Farm Bureau member in Milam County and reside with that member.

NM Blood Drive Aims to Save North Milam Program

Ninety three donors contributed to the Red Cross blood mobile Friday in Cameron pushing the 70 pint quota past a target. A two week, June fund drive seeks 3100 for administrative costs to sustain the North Milam blood program, with fundraising led by Frank Luecke and Cameron volunteers.

Hearne Man Tops 118-CCC Tourney

Hearne golfer Charles Luster shot a one over par 71 to win the Cameron Country Club 32nd Golf Tournament. The field of 118 from 18 Central Texas cities featured top placers in Championship Second Third and Fourth Flights with 200 barbecue lunch attendees.

W G Jack Henderson of Cameron died May 19 in Cameron Nursing Home at age 69. Born October 8, 1892 in Alabama, he was a painter and former Cameron Fire Chief. Frank Janek Sr. Burial in Cameron at St Monicas

Funeral services for Frank Janek Sr of Cameron were held at 9:30 am Tuesday at St Monicas Catholic Church with burial in St Monica's Cemetery. He died Sunday night at home after a heart attack at age 51. Survived by wife, a son Frank Jr., two daughters, his mother, five brothers, two sisters, and four grandchildren. Pallbearers listed.

Milam District grand jury returns seven true bills

A Milam District grand jury returned seven true bills on Friday including two indictments for murder and assault against Fort Hood private Joe Kellough. Another defendant, Robert Lee Milton, faces assault with intent to murder after being wounded in the same shooting that killed Willie Samuel Swain. Indictments also cover burglary, robbery, and felony theft with defendants Willlie Foster, Robert Otha Hill, Arthur Williams, A. C. Potts, and Arrin E. Shaffer named. Six witnesses testified as the panel met through the day with foreman Joe G. Moore and others serving as officers.

New Principal Hired For YHS

Jack R. Hughes was elected Yee High School principal by the Cameron Independent School District board Fay 17. He has led Point Isabel Independent Schools in Port Isabel Texas for two years and previously taught in Boling Needville Bellville high schools. Hughes, 34, holds BS and MEd from Southwest Texas State Teachers College and plans to move to Cameron after the school year ends.

Willie Eugene Milo 22 of Dodge City Kansas charged with assault with intent to murder after a shooting at Bubba's Place Cameron injuring Charles L Hobbs 24 who was treated and released from St Edwards Hospital Alice Pearl Mile 19 sister of Milo arrested for disturbing the peace and fined $20 Milo’s complaint filed before Justice BG Rice Police Chief Elvin Hoskins says the shooting happened about 1230 am Sunday.
