Milam County Enters Cotton Contests In Major Austin Drive

Milam County farmers participate in general and better staple cotton contests sponsored by the Austin cotton men and coordinated by the Cameron Chamber of Commerce. Prizes total 1500 with $1000 from The Austin American Statesman and $350 from the Cameron chamber plus offers from local cotton dealers. Entries list farmers from Thorndale San Gabriel Buckholts Cameron Rockdale Milano Maysfield and Gause with many routing numbers and farm names attached.

Legion 1 PTE State Fiddler Plan for Fourth Celebration

Members of the local American Legion post met Tuesday night for initiation ceremonies for three new members and conferred several degrees. They discussed building a post home with $1,000 already set aside, and planned a statewide fiddlers contest rodeo and other attractions for the July 4 celebration. Final plans and a big surprise were promised for the June 1 meeting.

Belver Memorial Day Speech Set by Jack Lewis DA

Jack Lewis district attorney accepted an invitation from the American Legion to address ex soldiers and the public on Monday May 3 at the district courtroom memorial day exercises. Soldiers to hear a comrade speak for first time in years. Merchants asked to close one hour Monday morning. Sunday ceremony includes monument erection and grave decorations by three local post committees.

The 72 year old Texas fiddler M P James plans to travel from Houston to Cameron for a state contest, noting he will practice to entertain the audience and remember old friends while continuing his distinguished fiddling career.

Former Cameron pastor to preach at local Baptist church

Rev. Russell C. White, former pastor of Cameron Baptist Church, will preach at the Baptist church here Sunday morning and night in two services. The announcement came via telegram from EF. S. Hutcherson, a Houston pastor at the Southern Baptist Convention. White has lived in North Carolina since resigning over three years ago and plans to greet Cameron friends at both services.

A Milam County native with years of experience, he is welcomed by Cameron residents and will serve a growing patient base. Chas. Baker of Gatesville visited Cameron to discuss a commercial chicken hatchery with S. M. Burns and the Cameron commercial club. Baker, an experienced hatchery operator, was briefed on the city’s prospects and invited to speak to the club about the venture.

Grand jury returns multiple felony indictments in local court

The grand jury indicted J. B. Allen and Cullen White for murder of Tom Bacey, who died after being beaten and found unconscious. Both men remain jailed on $5,000 bonds. Indictments also include Mrs. Lloyd T. Smith and her husband on forgery charges, plus several other men for burglary felony theft forgery and DUI.

Market Patronage Grows at Cash Store

Jeff Hefley of the Cash and Carry Store reports rising market patronage and increased meat sales. He sells only Swift premium and United States Government inspected meats, has added staff, and highlights meat from blue ribbon calves shown at the Fort Worth fat stock show.
