Riverside Tourist Park Opens With Bathing Revue in Milam County

Milam county and central Texas celebrate May 28 with the formal opening of Riverside Tourist Park and Bathing Beach near the Little River. A bathing revue, bridge dedication with Judge W. G. Gillis as speaker, and state official presence by Highway Commissioner John H. Bickett are planned, with judges named by Cecil S. Cone from Cameron and surrounding towns. Facilities include lights, running water, a store, filling station, and ample seating for visitors.

Tom Choate wins Milam County fiddling title at Milam High School event held last Friday night. John D. Westbrook of Ben Arnold takes top jig dancing honors. Second and third placeters are listed with winners: W. R. Webb, T. M. Mabry, Geo. Mangum in fiddling. Henry Shuffield and Sam Murray in dancing. Judges included T. G. Sampson and others. event benefited the athletic association.

Junior Band Dominates East Texas Contest in Waco

Cameron junior band directed by George Fairleigh won first prize at the East Texas Band Contest on May 3 in Waco. The eleven and a half year old group earned 150 dollars cash, a silver cup, a director’s gold medal, 80 dollars in music-house trade, and a 25 dollar prize for lowest average, with chaperones praised for the trip.

Famous New Dry Goods Store Opens Friday in Cameron

The Famous new dry goods store in Cameron will formally open this Friday with a big bargain list. Abrams Brothers, new arrivals from Hearne, will present David Crockett drawing cartoons on show windows. Crockett is the staff cartoonist for the Waco Times Herald and reputedly the south's premier exhibition cartoonist.

Copeland Case Is Affirmed By Court

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the conviction and death sentence of George Smith of De Witt County and the $1,000 fine on Rev. A. Reilly Copeland of Waco for injuring Miss Adelaide Hague's reputation. The court rejected his claim to be tried for slander rather than libel and denied his motion to abate the indictment citing alleged Ku Klux Klan involvement.

Palestine shrines praised as Catholic Church preserves holy sites

Rev. James T. Coffey of St. Louis spoke to Cameron listeners about progress in preserving Palestinian holy places. The Catholic Church now marks and maintains key sites, including Mount of Transfiguration and Annunciation, open to all faiths. Coffey urged Christian unity and respect amid new roads and improved travel under British oversight.

At a Wednesday council meeting Cameron Enterprise was named the city’s official organ for the coming year. The Herald declined the designation due to its editor and the president being council members.

Club to Promote Planting of Grapes in Milam County

On the proposal of C. W. Lawrence the commercial club will likely urge farmers to plant grapes suited to sandy Milam County soil. A special committee including Lawrence Jackson Lesovsky and Newton will report after study at the next meeting.

Chautauqua Opens Here for Season on June 8

W. C. Triggs announces the 1926 Chautauqua season opens in Cameron on June 18 with a big tent in the park. Horner says the program will be the best ever under canvas for the company. The local committee, well organized, begins preparations for entertainment.

City Seeks Bids on Daily Balances for City Funds

The city council directs the city attorney to prepare a notice inviting bids on daily balances for city funds. Bids will be opened at the regular meeting on May 18 and must indicate interest on daily balances in both sinking funds and checking deposits.

Miss Mary Young and Mr. A E Green wed at High Noon Thursday in the Presbyterian church in Cameron. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. H G Kenney with a large crowd in attendance. The couple, from old Cameron families, began dating in high school and left for a honeymoon afterward.

Duco Plant For Autos And Furniture Opens In Cameron

R H Redfield and Son open a Duco paint plant in Cameron specializing in the Duco process for automobiles and furniture. The water proof finish is used by 33 auto manufacturers and the Mondrik building in Santa Fe town houses the well equipped plant. Redfield invites demonstrations and public visits to showcase the Duco qualities.

Milam County Commission seeks re election second term

L N McDonald, Precinct 4 commissioner covering beats 6 and 7, seeks a second term in the Democratic primary in July. He has completed his first term ending next January and pledges economy, good roads, and continued county improvements with strong local support.

Mother's Day service at First Methodist Church
