Hauks Feted On Return From Oversea Duty
Sgt. 3 W. W. Hauk son of Mr and Mrs Joe Hauk Route 3 Rosebud and husband of Anita Ocker Hauk arrived in New York April 9 from overseas serving in Austria and Italy. Discharged at Camp Chaffee Ark he reached home April 13. He was honored with a barbecue at City Park Bryan last Sunday with relatives from Wortham Victoria Crosby Houston Cameron Rosebud Clarkson and Bryan in attendance. He and his wife plan for him to farm in Clarkson Community.

William C. Bill Black, 28, Milam County native and son of Sheriff Carl Black, announces candidacy for the State Legislature from the 56th District comprising Milam and Robertson Counties. Cameron native Jack Slaughter has been named local manager for Lone Star Gas at Burnet effective May 1. He will oversee gas service and maintenance for over 1,300 customers in Burnet and Marble Falls, after a career starting as a labourer in Cameron in 1949 and rising through roles including store keeper and chief clerk. He has led civic groups such as the Lions Club and Cameron Jaycees and is a member of the Masonic Lodge and Methodist Church.

The Cameron townsite began in 1846 with 60 acres from Daniel Monroe and 4071 acres from Monroe for Mexican War service. Milam Liberal Institute deeds, cornerstone ceremonies, and fires shaped the school’s site and building history. Mary Lake Henderson, a former Yoe High teacher, is slated to speak at the May 10 cornerstone ceremony.

Seventh District UDC Meets at the Sycamores
The Seventh District United Daughters of the Confederacy gathered at the Sycamores the home of Mrs. R L Batte Sr on Wednesday April 25. Temple Belton and Rosebud Chapters were represented with remarks by Division State President Mrs Erl Ramsey and talks by Miss Vera Warrock state magazine chair Mrs W G Robertson. Luncheon featured barbecue turkey for 40. A district mascot five year old Barbara Jo Hickman helped serve. Two flower baskets marked graves of Mary Black and Reverend James Peeler were placed at local cemeteries by the Mary Black Circle and Confederate Chaplain supporters.
