The play Ghost Bird, presented last Thursday night for Cameron firemen, was a success in every way. Directed by Leo Werner and Jack Harden, the cast delivered fine performances with refreshing vaudeville between acts and the firemen received a neat sum from the event.
Albert Triggs Jr has purchased the Texas Company filling station agency from Gaston Barmore and will operate the station in Cameron. The station, recently erected by Joe Bass, was leased to Barmore who will focus on the paint shop. Texaco products are sold. Mr Tutges has been with the Texas Company in the area for several months.
Milam county Democrats vote in their precincts this Saturday to choose presidential preference and elect delegates to the county convention on May 8, which in turn sends delegates to the state Beaumont convention for national delegates. Downtown Cameron poll 6 30 pm Saturday. country precincts 2 pm. All participants must pledge to support party nominees.
The condition of T. S. Henderson, longtime Democrat and attorney, was reported as hopeful after a week of critical pneumonia illness. Family and friends expect gradual recovery in the coming weeks as physicians note improvement.
The Community Natural Gas Company has leased the Sampson Building formerly occupied by Cameron Water Company next to Johnson jewelry store. This brings natural gas to Cameron with work expected soon on mains and street paving to wait until construction is complete. Piping is planned for June and July with surveys underway and contractors to begin once estimates are ready.
Milam County Day at A and M College will bring many residents from this section to College Station Friday. George Banzhaf county agent and Miss Minnie Bartholomew home demonstration agent will accompany the delegates. The Maysfield school had considered closing for the event.
Chas Sens announces candidacy for re election as Constable ahead of the Democratic primary on July 28 1928. The veteran peace officer asks for support of friends in the precinct he has served for years and promises to serve to the best of his ability if re elected.
The Horned Frog filling station opened Saturday drawing a large crowd to Cameron. Operators are A. R. Walschak, J. W. Raska, and L. J. Raska, with the station built by R. L. Batte who leased it to the trio. Mr Batte also plans a second drive in station on Buckholts road.
Local boxers express eagerness for another appearance in the ring and return matches are being planned. The date for the show will be announced later.
The Cameron Herald marks its 50th year of publication, noting Milam County Abstract Co. as its only older business. Established in 1878, the paper has issued every issue without interruption and invites long-time readers to share memories for a future article.
Hon W R Poage longtime state legislator announces candidacy for the Senate from the 13th District covering Falls Limestone Milam and McLennan counties. A Waco resident for 15 years he is a lawyer and former House leader, noted for the Economy Bloc chairmanship and key reforms including gas tax and motor license discussions.
Survey indicates farmers and cow owners near Cameron will support a cheese factory. Commercial Club is assured of sufficient milk. J. C. Tucker Geo Banzhaf and W. H. Shipp appointed to lead an eight member committee including S. M. Burns R. H. McIntosh and S. Kestenbaum.
Material for the all steel gin is arriving for R L Batte who plans a fireproof plant on the former round bale gin site. The 75 by 16 foot building will have no wood, begin at once, and aim for completion by the ginning season opening.
Moody Hayes saved six year old Johnnie Shelton after the boy fell into a deep settling basin. Another child alerted rescuers as Hayes plunged in and dragged the boy out before he sank again. Mr Watson of the Texas Water Company assisted, Dr Sapp treated the boy, and rescuers worked until the doctor arrived.
The Val Verde Home Demonstration Club met May 1 at Mrs John West s home with four visitors. Miss Bartholomew demonstrated yeast bread and lemon pie and plans were made for a May 14 1928 meeting at Imogene Moore s home to discuss clothing for a clothing contest. Members listed include Rena Griffin Imogene Moore Ruthie Cryer Edna Cryer Opal Clendennen Aileen Underwood and Mary West with reporters noting two proud members Rena Griffin and Imogene Moore.
Poage plans an active campaign once recovered from illness. He will announce the time and place of his opening address soon and says he will run on his record, stressing promises fulfilled. He notes reductions to seven million in appropriations and support for a $15.00 apportionment for state schools, denying claims he would cripple state government.
Committees were appointed at Giddings to back maintenance of State Highway 44 south of Rockdale. Judge Jeff T. Kemp and county engineer A Mitchell attended. Officials fearedRoute maintenance might lapse, but local residents now plan to support retaining the road.
A. J. Walzel joins the International Grocers Alliance of America and opens his store Saturday morning with a sale music prizes and features. The L G A store occupies the former Texas State Bank building after remodeling under the national I G A plan emphasizing buying power and lower prices for the public.
M. Fox of Hicks Rubber Co has begun spring ads for Dayton Tires. The campaign quotes many prices and notes Cameron car owners value the tires for quality and value, boosting his sales after selling Daytons for over a year.
W B Levy manager of the B R Goldberg store announces a 20 000 cash raising sale starting Saturday morning. The event runs 21 days with thousands of customers expected. Goods are new season merchandise marked down to sacrifice profits as part of a major value giving effort.
Lyon Dry Goods Company announces a May Day sale with special values and economy for the people. Mr. Lyon has built a strong local business through consistent value giving and promises greater opportunities this year.
Democrats pledge support to Governor Alfred Smith of New York for the presidential nomination. Connecticut will give its 14 votes at Houston until the delegates are released.
In San Francisco Governor Alfred F. Smith of New York won the California Democratic presidential preference primary over Senators Reed and Walsh. Smith captured 150,489 votes to Reed 66,651 and Walsh 44,956 among 8,908,794 total ballots. Reed campaigner Wilbur Legette floated an independent ticket if Smith is nominated, asking Josephus Daniels to run as vice president on a Reed-led ticket.
The State Highway Commission allotted 175000 to hard surface a ten mile segment of Highway 43 from Milano through Adale to the Rockdale precinct line Dry Brushy. Construction will start this summer with rock or gravel base and asphalt topping similar to the Round Rock to Hutto road.
Marl Bragg spent the weekend in Lexington visiting friends and returned home early Sunday morning.
De and Mrs J Z Young of Buckholts were Cameron visitors on Wednesday.
Dr. M. P. Andrews of Corsicana led the Baptist revival here with strong attendance and inspirational sermons. The well known Texas preacher, board member of Texas Association educational affairs, will depart Friday night. Rev. E B Hutcherson will continue the meeting as additions are reported to the church.
