Judge Graham Gillis transfers Clarence Booker case to Travis county. Booker charged with the murder of Andy Smith in Cameron on December 22, 1932. Trial date set for April 17.
The court on its own motion changes venue of State of Texas v Clarence Booker, case 9264, from Milam to Travis County Texas due to widespread publicity and prejudice in Milam and surrounding counties. The Milam County Sheriff is to transfer Booker to the Travis County District Court for trial in the 53rd Judicial District.
Chas Zidell marks the first anniversary of The Fair with a pre Easter sale featuring new season merchandise at record low prices. He opened the store a year ago after leaving the New St Louis Store and has built a strong trade attracting many shoppers this weekend. The sale offers 2000 pairs of shoes and low Easter dresses and frocks to draw customers.
Glenn Kahler, Yee High School valedictorian in 1928, a Galveston medical student, is elected manager of the Students Association and editor of the university magazine funded by Galveston merchants. He is Archon of his fraternity and will attend the national convention in Chicago next year. He is the son of Mr and Mrs E J Kahler of Buckholts and nephew of Mr and Mrs E L Kahler of Cameron. He will be 22 at graduation.
Mrs Mary E Campbell age 85 died at her daughter Mrs N E Coulbourn home in Yarrellton near Cameron on March 28 1933. Funeral at daughter home conducted by Rev M M Barnett and burial in North Elm cemetery. Born Florence Alabama 1847 she moved to Texas as a child and left a widower. Survived by six children Colbourn Tubbs Claxon Campbell Raymond Seth Hugh.
S. W. Dees was found not guilty by a district court jury on cattle theft charges. The indictment alleged Dees stole cattle from B. F. Stewart of Cameron and sold them to a Rosebud market. E. A. Camp of Rockdale defended Dees while S. M. Burns led the prosecution.
J. W. Stitt, grocer, died suddenly from heart attack in the yard of his home and store on the Country Club road. Found by family, he had suffered heart attacks for months and operated the grocery two years. Funeral plans set for Friday morning. survived by widow and small children, Mrs. Stitt daughter of the late T. N. Lindsey.
Farmers in Milam County received 165 government loan checks on Wednesday via County Clerk Homer Nabours and mailed to local growers. Loans totaling 300 have been issued, with average amounts under 100 dollars, as applications remain open through April 39. Farmers must cut cotton acreage 30 percent and landlords must sign lien waivers for tenant loans.
The Marine Corps recruiting station at 535 St. Charles Street New Orleans announces April vacancies and invites applications from high school graduates and college students. Recruits may be chosen for sea duty aboard ships travel to distant lands and exposure to aviation radio and clerical fields. Applications available at the New Orleans station.
It was announced that postal employees received a 15 percent wage reduction as part of President Roosevelt’s economy program. The cut applies to all workers, regardless of pay level, under broad government cost-cutting powers granted to Congress.
About 400 signatories including the managing editor of a local daily signed a petition to President-Elect Roosevelt urging an economy policy. Four people refused to sign. The petition also named Giuseppe Zangara, the man who tried to assassinate Roosevelt, as a cabinet member.
Clarence Booker, a negro, will be tried in District Court in Austin for the murder of Cameron grocer Andy Smith on December 22, 1992. District Court transferred the case to Travis County on grounds of local prejudice and publicity hindering a fair trial.
County health officer Dr W R Newton reports a limited supply of serums for liphtheria and typhoid vaccination. Free serums are available to those unable to pay for injections. Newton expects a decline in typhoid and diphtheria next year and has recovered to resume hospital surgical work.
An amendment corrects the rural school division winner at the Milam County Interscholastic Meet. Bethlehem should be first in the rural division with 117.5 total points, 97.5 in literary events and 20 in athletic events. Finis Keaton of Minerva had the highest arithmetic score at 160.
Moulton Cobb editor of the Mission Enterprise at Mission in the Rio Grande Valley is here for a few days visit with his parents Mr and Mrs W M Cobb. He has many friends who will welcome his return visit.
Knights of Pythias members and former members will gather April 10 in Castle Hall at Mi lam Lodge No. 125 for an evening of entertainment. Fred Jackson, Chancellor Commander, announced plans on Wednesday. Refreshments to be served and a good program of entertainment will be provided. All members are urged to attend.
The Herald notes Jerome McAtee and Monroe Vogelsang had charge of the orchestra at the Burlington legion event last Tuesday night. Cameron Legion members staying in Burlington entertained visiting Legionnaires, and Mrs Jeff Davis of Center hosted her sister Mrs James W Coleman and her mother Mrs Bell McKinney who spent the winter with them.
