Cameron Woman's Nephew Killed In Plane Crash
Harold Shumate former Wacoan and radio announcer for WACO was killed in a plane crash near Harlingen along with Earl Elwell. Their open cockpit Waco biplane vanished Sunday and bodies were found Monday at the Arroyo Colorado mouth ten miles south of Red Fish Bay. Shumate, raised in Waco, served in the Navy and later worked with KGBS Harlingen. He left a widow and four children with surviving parents and an aunt in Cameron.

The Milam County Farm Bureau held its March 17 birthday celebration at Simon George Memorial Hall Cameron drawing about 2,000 farmers and families. About 1,000 members and 6,503 Blue Cross families are enrolled. Speakers included Charlie McLellan Marvin Carter and Edward Hay. SHERWOOD McLerran introduced officers and recreation leaders. Bands provided entertainment and a radio broadcast by Ted Gouldy and the Hired Hands featuring Shirley Davis. An all woman orchestra contributed to the festivities.

Captain Joshua V De Armond, husband of Barbara De Armond formerly of Cameron Louisiana and son of Mr and Mrs Welfort De Armond Greenwell Springs Louisiana, moved from the 314th Air Division to the 35th Fighter-Interceptor Wing at Johnson Air Base Japan with his wife and two children. A former LSU student he joined the Coast Artillery in 1941 and became a USAF pilot in 1942. He served in North Africa and Italy earning the Air Medal with Oak Leaf cluster the Bronze Star and campaign ribbons. He returned to the United States then prepared for the Pacific Theater in July 1948.

Cameron Seeks Change In 100-Foot Highway Right Of Way
L. G. Smith of the Cameron Chamber of Commerce protested a 100 foot right of way for State Highway 36 through Cameron at a public hearing in Austin. He argued the through Negro settlement would bottleneck into an 80 foot minimum in the business section. The commission said 80 feet is the minimum and asked Smith to confer with engineers to work out an agreement.
