Gause discusses two Milk Bowl ideas. A 25 to 35 foot statue of a boy football player could rise on main street with concrete materials funded and a Texas university student sculptor sought as a volunteer. Milam County Boys' Ranch for deprived youth may receive donated land near Gause, with game profits possibly supporting the project.
W D Bigbee, Cameron native and Civil Engineer with over thirty years in road building, announces his bid for Commissioner of Precinct 2 in the upcoming July Democratic Primary. He cites broad local support and a background with the Construction Engineer A F Mitchell. Formal announcement to appear in local papers soon.
Rush A. Thomas 66 Cameron businessman died at King's Daughters Hospital Temple at 4:00 am Friday March 10 1950 after a period of illness. He operated George A Thomas & Sons Drug Store in Cameron begun 1890 by his father and grew with Cameron Central Texas. Born August 21 1883 in Franklin Robertson County he grew up in Waco and Cameron and earned a UT pharmacy degree before returning to the family store.
A Senate House Conference Committee approved a farm price support compromise boosting cotton eligible land by about 1.2 million acres to 21 million and adding 100 thousand peanut acres. The plan also removes the peanut penalty if crushed for oil and drops a wheat expansion provision. Vote splits show party lines as debate continues before final passage.
C S Raney commissioner for Milam County Precinct 1 announced today in Milam. He will seek re election to a second term in the July Democratic Primary. Friends say his precinct affairs are in excellent shape and his formal announcement will appear in this and other papers soon.
Alvan Bryan, 70, Waco attorney and past grand master of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas, died en route to a hospital after suffering a heart attack at his office. A Baylor trustee and former Baylor Stadium Corp vice president, he joined Masonry in 1902 and led the Texas Grand Lodge in 1932. He held multiple Masonic ranks and was active in Dallas Scottish Rite, the Shriners in Waco, and Knights of Constantine.
Mr Ingram recently opened the Cameron Gas Equipment Company at 211 West 1st reporting a strong opening crowd and solid sales of Server Refrigerators and Gas Ranges.
The Austin city health department disclosed 466 pounds of horse meat labeled beef tenders were confiscated from a local wholesale distributor. Health Chief H. E. Hargis said the shipment was part of a larger Dallas distribution and that most of it had been seized before reaching retailers. Samples were sent to the state lab for testing. the wholesaler cooperated and surrendered records.
William Stolz 86 died at Brazos Valley Hospital at 2 00 p m Friday March 10. Born in Germany he came to the US as a child and worked as a monument dealer. Survived by one daughter Emmy Stolz of Anderson four sons William Stolz Jr Carl H Stolz Victor H Stolz and Louis A Stolz all of Navasota one sister Mrs B Demuth of San Antonio two brothers Max Stolz of Albuquerque NM and Paul Stolz of Kansas City MO four grandchildren. Governor Allan Shivers signed two bills from the recent special session. One created a state board of tuberculosis nurses examiners led by Senator Dorsey Hardeman of San Angelo. The other, by Senator Keith Kelly of Fort Worth, moved 15 000 between funds in the adjutant general's department to pay National Guardsmen who aided in last year's Fort Worth flood relief.
Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Chamberlain and daughter Kay of Texas City spent the weekend with his parents Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Chamberlain.
The TB X Ray Unit arrives in Cameron March 17 18 and 21 25 with all unit costs paid by taxes. Social civic and fraternal groups are asked to donate 3.00 or more to cover incidental expenses. Any unused funds will form a permanent Cameron survey fund for next year.
County Attorney Ed Gunn announces he will run for re election seeking the Democratic nomination in the July primary. He notes a record of convictions and says broad public support and cooperation contributed to his successful term. formal announcement to appear in this newspaper and others.
Joe Sheppard Sr of Thorndale must serve a three year term in Texas Prison for cattle theft. The Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin affirmed the district court jury verdict. He was tried in September 1949 and appeal followed. mandate received and he has been taken to Huntsville penitentiary.
Texas failed to obtain a delay in the tidelands suit and the U S Supreme Court scheduled arguments for Monday March 27. The government seeks tidelands claims off Texas and Louisiana coasts with Texas Attorney General Price Daniel urging postponement until after May 1 for further consultation with top attorneys.
Dr. J. L. Walker spoke on cancer at the Cameron Lions Club regular meeting held at the Milam cafe Tuesday. L. Van Perkins chaired the gathering and introduced the speaker.
W. L. McIntosh was installed as president of the Cameron Chamber of Commerce with eight new directors taking office at the annual banquet. The new directors are N. L. Caperton, Dr. George Bowman, Woodrow Lowe, Lester Williams, Albert Collins, W. F. Sharpe, Earl Curtis and J. Max Howard.
Cameron's tiniest baby Frances Freeman born February 5 at home weighed 2 pounds 11 ounces at birth and 2 pounds 15 ounces now. In Newton Memorial Hospital incubator with moist heat she improves under Dr. T. K. Crump and Dr. David Shapiro notes. Parents are students at O. J. Thomas High School. mother 16 father 18. The baby is a charity patient and remains in incubator until reaching five pounds.
Dr. S Stephen McKinney of Houston former pastor of First Methodist in 1910 and 1911 will speak at the groundbreaking service at 3 p m Tuesday. He led the church when the building destroyed by fire in 1949 was erected. Rev Donald R Box said all pastors and churchmen in the area are invited for worship. The site has been graded and staked with preparations complete for a new building costing about 70000 dollars.
Milam County Red Cross fund chairman Gene Blake reports donations so far this drive are below levels from the same period last year. As of March 15, 1949, collections totaled 889.99 with several communities reporting partial or complete drive totals and district chairmen urged to submit figures to show progress and boost the thermometer on the courthouse lawn.
Womack Brashear announces candidacy for Justice of Peace Precinct 1 subject to the July Democratic Primary. He resigned due to ill health but is improved and plans to campaign. Thomas Brashear fills the office by appointment and Womack will return to duty if elected.
Members of the statewide Cotton Committee of Texas will meet in Dallas March 18 to plan the eleventh annual Cotton Research Congress. Burris C. Jackson of Hillsboro is general chairman. The congress, at the Baker Hotel July 26-28, will attract leaders from cotton states and several foreign countries.
