Press representatives dined with Governor and Mrs Briscoe at the Mansion in two rooms. The governor discussed a balanced budget with a 300 million contingency for 1974 75 and supported rural development, metro transit, and an ethics proposal via the Secretary of State's office.
A noon meal with the press at the Texas Governor's Mansion featured Governor Briscoe and First Lady amid a large media turnout. Attending officials included Atty Gen. Hill, Secretary of State Mark White, Lt-Gov. Hobby, and House Speaker Daniel. A relaxed luncheon followed busy day with legislators.
Oscar Calhoun of 710 Walnut Cameron was rushed to Scott and White Temple after a one car crash on the Santa Fe underpass near Mack s Service Station. His 1957 Chevrolet rolled after hitting a ditch, landing on its top and causing cuts and an injured leg. Authorities said the extent of injuries was not yet known.
The first Earth Resources Technology Satellite known as ERTS-1 has orbited the earth since July, capturing over 160 000 pictures and mapping 90 percent of the United States. It reports potential copper in Pakistan, nickel in Canada and Africa, California fire risks from eucalyptus, and corrections to Amazon charts. The $200 million project aims to monitor pollution, soils, forests, waters, and underground reserves, with 14 daily orbits and a planned one year operation. a successor was delayed to 1975 by budget limits.
Lone Star Gas asks the city to restore a cost adjustment clause that would let rates rise or fall without council approval, tied to Railroad Commission gate rates. E L Edwards cited widespread adoption of the clause and the council tabled the request for a future meeting.
Absentee voting is now available for both city and school board elections. City voters will reelect three incumbents Starrett Hickman Bob Clark and Lawrence Zotz on April 3. School election on April 7 features three open seats with incumbents Bentley House Charles McDermott and Forrest Sapp seeking re election and newcomers John Henderson Jr and Mrs Carol Barr challenging them. Absentee ballots may be cast at the superintendent’s office for the school race and at city hall for the city contest.
The regular monthly meeting of Cub Scout Pack will be held Monday March 26 at 7 p.m. in the Methodist Fellowship Hall. Awards will be presented and refreshments served. The Scout Fair on March 31 will be discussed. All Cub Scouts and parents are urged to attend.
The James Connally Campus of the Texas State Technical Institute offers a two year laser electro optics program led by Dr. Donald Pierson. The course blends electronics lasers and optics to train technicians for industrial scientific and medical fields. Since 1970 enrollment grew to 55 with strong job prospects and an average starting salary above 10000.
