Fred Johnson, 42, new head football coach and athletic director at Rockdale High School. Johnson brings 16 years coaching experience with 13 winning seasons and has been head coach and AD at Angleton for eight years. He was chosen from more than 50 applicants and will arrive this week to assume duties at Tigerland.
Hearne City Council approved a rate adjustment clause from Lone Star Gas Company. The clause lets the utility pass through to customers gas costs as they are incurred due to a natural gas shortage. A company representative cited the shortage and need to pursue new sources.
Dragging operations continued for the body of Gilbert Owen Swift 22 of College Station who reportedly fell from a sailboat last Sunday near Overlook Marina at Lake Somerville. His companion Clayton Riddle 22 of Houston was pulled from the water and taken to Brenham hospital.
More than 18 000 signatures from Central Texas were taken to Washington D C by city councilman F A Morris. He will meet with Amtrak officials and U S Senators Lloyd Bentsen and John Tower and U S Representative W R Poage to press for using the present Fort Worth route.
Capt Arthur Hoffson of Cameron and Washington says he cannot speak about Air Force Capt William Elmo Powell until after an Air Force debriefing. Mr and Mrs Charles Powell of Gatesville kept a 4 1/2 year vigil since Powell was shot down over North Vietnam in 1968.
Lott Volunteer Firemen sponsor a Clark and Walters Circus on April 5 at the school ground for two performances. Proceeds fund burn prevention equipment for the fire department.
Rep. Dan Kubiak said the Supreme Court Rodriguez ruling does not fix inequities in Texas school funding. He chairs the House Education Committee and schedules April 4 hearings on four bills from the State Board of Education and the Texas State Teachers Association to pursue fairer state and local financing.

Ken Smith of Rockdale named chairman of Tejas Boy Scout District program Together 73 to recruit 19 prospective sponsoring organizations in Rockdale Cameron Rosebud Lott Milano Thorndale Buckholts Westphalia and Franklin for 40 units and 600 boys. The district now has 20 sponsors across two and a half counties.
County motorists face a deadline to purchase 1973 license plates by Sunday April 1. Bring three part license forms from the Texas Highway Department or your auto title and current registration receipts to the tax office. Plates may be purchased at Gaither Motor Co Rockdale Ideal Motor Co Thorn Dale Warners Store Gause and Otto Kelm Sharp.
Southwest Milam Water Supply Corporation sets its annual membership meeting for Saturday March 31 at 7 p m in the Rockdale junior high cafetorium. Three board seats are up for election. Current officers are President Claude Spence Vice President Billy Boyd and Secretary Treasurer John Yoakum. Construction on water lines to Minerva Hanover Black Jack and toward Tracy is near ready with funds secured and the contractor ready. Members along the route should place stakes for meter locations.
