M E Church Holds Training School in Cameron

A Marlin District training council for M E Church South leaders met in Cameron on March 18 with addresses by Rev C M Harless Rev L B Elrod Dr Morgan and others. Attendees learned modern church finance methods and the May 18 25 $35 000 000 nationwide drive. Texas annual conference aims for $1 301 589 30. Marlin quota is $135 000. Bishop Ainsworth closed with a sermon on stewardship.

Weatherford Editor R K Phillips Visits Cameron Family

Mr and Mrs R K Phillips and daughter Mildred and aunt Miss Marguerite Smith of Weatherford arrived in Cameron late last week and stayed with C R Phillips and family. R K Phillips owns and edits the Weatherford Democrat and notes oil activity boosts business. The party also visited Rockdale and E B Phillips and family of the Henne Meyer Company.

Commercial Club Holds Busy Cameron Session

In April the Cameron Commercial Club met with many members present. They discussed hiring a civil engineer for Milam County roads, street sprinkler issues, and good road work by two county crews. A National Good Roads meeting attendance plan was approved and a 20 member committee named. Supt L H Kidd urged a 5 to 10 acre play park for schools and county meets, with a five person committee to report next meeting. The club's first year ends March 28 with a big semiannual election upcoming.

Black Billy Sunday Holds Grand Texas Revival in Cameron

The Black Billy Sunday revival draws hundreds from Milam County to Cameron Grove Baptist Church to hear the famed negro evangelist. He is to be baptized Sunday at 4 30 with Pastor Wm Lofton performing rites. The event, seen as a life changing miracle, may spawn a future monster gospel tabernacle.

Red Cross seeks used clothing in massive campaign

The Red Cross calls for 10 000 tons of clothing from March 24 to 31 to aid Allied refugees. One thousand tons are allotted to the Southwestern Division, double its Belgium campaign quota. All garments are needed including blankets, shoes and fabrics. even imperfect items can be repaired. Collection runs through Red Cross Headquarters with films to Europe via the European Relief Administration.

Roy Terry Arrives in New York from the Front

Mr and Mrs J S Terry received a telegram confirming their son Roy Terry arrived safely in New York City. He is in an army hospital and will be detained there for a period due to exposure from a gas attack. Terry has spent eight months in France and saw heavy fighting in the war.

Fund Drive For Black Billy Seeks Cameron Gifts

Pastor Loftin appeals to Cameron residents to donate to a fund honoring Black Billy for his uplifting work. Citizens are urged to give at least one dollar, with Mr. Rylander of Watson Farm contributing five dollars and others giving smaller sums. Black Billy will deliver his Spanish War lecture “An Evening on the Battle Fields of Sunny Cuba” in Cameron, featuring negro troops at San Juan Hill. The lecture, already a nationwide triumph, has drawn 19 000 listeners at the San Diego Exposition and is praised as patriotic eloquence.

Baileyville Tragedy Hooks Milam County Killing

Will Hardaway is accused of shooting and killing Albert Greenleese at Baileyville, a long time neighbors dispute with two shots from a 38 caliber pistol and a shotgun. Greenleese, 85, left a wife and five children. Hardaway, 40, has four children. Sheriff Blaylock arrested him after he surrendered near Jones Prairie. An examining trial is set for Friday in the district courtroom. Greenleese’s funeral was held Wednesday morning.

Milam County Visitors Attend Fort Worth Fat Stock Show

E A Barmore and E E Pool of the Maysfield community joined Milam county visitors at the Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth last week. Barmore praised the event calling it the most successful he had attended and reported a promising bull calf chosen for his herd, though the animal had already sold for 430 dollars.
