Treasury urges renewed duties on imported antiques after finding 75 to 80 percent of past arrivals were fakes. U S imports rose to over 600 million while 1906 duty capped at 478 thousand. Also notes rare total solar eclipses with forecasts through 21st century and Fortune survey on national accumulations.
Chas Masser, 45, WWVeteran and laborer on the Sefcik farm at Sand Grove, was shot to death at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Frank Sefcik, 81, owner of the farm, surrendered to Constable Will Colvin at Rockdale. Murder charges filed. witness was Sefcik's step daughter in law. The DA and sheriff were briefed as details emerged.
Cameron chamber of commerce offers to help field a night baseball facility. A committee will study costs and financing to raise about 2500 dollars. Citizens may underwrite the plan as a baseball council would run the club with strict finances. Four games a week could be played and $150 per game could cover debt and expenses.
Rev. Vernon G. Miles announces the annual summer revival at First Baptist Church Cameron starting Sunday June 27. Preaching twice daily at 9 30 a m and 8 p m with Miss Lilian McCullough directing song services. The eight day campaign marks Miles second revival since becoming pastor. Public invited.
B B Blaylock formerly of the Baptist church and now with United Dry Forces of Texas will speak at 11 o clock Sunday at First Methodist Church. He promotes the prohibition push in Texas aiming to vote out liquor and beer sales. A petition circulates in the county asking the Commissioners Court to order an election.
City Marshal Gene Smith arrested Victor Lucio a Mexican at Bremond on Sunday. Lucio faces burglary and federal charges for burglarizing Dell Fuller property and stealing a gun, and theft of a parcel post package at the depot from E O Schiller valued at about $65. The offenses occurred in Cameron two months ago.
Funeral services for Mrs. W. T. Mowdy 69 were held from W. P. Mangum home at 5 p m with Rev. Maurice Grove officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill cemetery beside her husband Dr W T Mowdy who died in 1927. Born Susan Adelia Barnes November 9 1867 in Irving College Tennessee she attended Cumberland Presbyterian College and married Dr Mowdy February 26 1890. Survived by three sons Charles Austin Tom and Wiley Mangum a daughter and three brothers and a sister all named local residents. She was a member of the Christian church and died Friday night after a long illness.
Mrs J B White and her sister Miss Addie Hunt of San Angelo depart Cameron at noon Wednesday for a several days visit with another sister Mrs L J Windham in Texas City.
Nolan Butler 18 and G. C. Gaines 21 were involved in a fatal night incident in Val Verde on March 13. Prosecution seeks the electric chair with self defense urged by defense attorney Jack Lewis. Witnesses McCormick and Downing testified that no words preceded the stabbing. Jury impaneled with local residents. testimony resumed after a field row surfaced between families.
Henry Washington ten and Willie Dotson fourteen were taken by City Marshal Gene Smith on theft charges involving silver service from the Presbyterian church. They were released due to no space in the reformatory after returning three platters once detection occurred.
Public tours of 4H Club girls showcases planned across county with visits to Detmold San Gabriel Briary Burlington Ben Arnold Curry North Elm Gause Milano Ad Hall Tracy Duncan Val Verde on June 23 to July 6. Each tour lists participant names and viewing times.
On Sunday night June 27 a chicken and sausage supper will be held at the public hall in Burlington sponsored by St. Michael Altar Society members. Everybody is invited to attend as part of the parish entertainment.
A family chicken supper is set at Vogelsang Church on June 29 at 7 o clock. The Vogelsang church is noted for its good suppers and the public is invited to attend.
Dr A H Broden of Buckholts has opened offices in the Auditorium Hotel and will practice naturopathy health science. He is non medical and non surgical and licensed lead practitioner noted for education in Germany and major US cities.
Cameron Theatre presents Romeo and Juliet with Norma Shearer Leslie Howard and John Barrymore in a legendary love story set to grand color and romance. Two daily shows start 2 30 p m matinee and 8 30 p m tonight opens Thursday June 24 and runs through Friday.
A detailed confession from JL McRea, a minister jailed for defrauding Cameron Life Insurance, claims the Devil controlled him for hours. He says he allowed a locomotive to sever his left arm while near Hicks in Milam county and planned a $15,000 railroad suit after collecting $600. He now seeks forgiveness and readiness to face charges.
