Highway bandits kill girl near Hearne pass

Miss Ledelle Hammond, 20, of Kosse, was shot through the heart and her escort Erwin Conway, 21, of Bryan, wounded when attackers halted their car nine miles north of Hearne on Highway No 6 Friday night. Conway described a lone woman signaling then two men emerging from darkness as they approached a parked car. The couple were driving to Bryan to announce their engagement.

Legion Boosters Plan Cameron July 4 Trips

The American Legion Edwin Hardy Post No. 9 stages annual booster trips to advertise the Cameron 4th of July celebration. Two caravan tours are set for June 22 and June 23, covering towns north west and south east of Cameron. Local business houses are urged to provide cars for the caravans to ensure a standout Cameron observance.

Milam County Road Requests Before Austin Highway Board

Cameron Chamber of Commerce committee members led by County Judge Jeff T Kemp appeared before the highway commission in Austin on Monday to seek Milam County road improvements. The panel secured approval for adding banisters to the Elm Creek bridge, with further requests including concreting U S Highway 77 from Burlington to the Elm Creek bridge and the right of way for a project noted as Class 1 1.

Word Lacking In Hunt for Mattern

In Seattle no word yet if two Navy airmen aboard the Ar gonne in the Pribilof Islands have reached a search for Jimmie Mattern missing six days on a Siberia to Nome flight. Ensign William A. Moffett Jr and Lieut John West face fog and clouds as weather slows rescue efforts. Naval radio at Puget Sound Yard has given no update from the Argonne.

Milam County Names Five to Rehab Act Board

A five man County Board of Welfare and Employment was appointed by the Commissioners Court to oversee Milam public works under the Recovery Act and administer funds. The appointees are Judge O C Nolte Ben Arnold H C Meyer Rockdale Giles L Arriett Cameron J B White Cameron and Chas Saller Thorndale. Rev J P Love will remain chairman and director of the Milam County Emergency Relief Association while work falls under the new commission. The board seeks cooperation from the court Chambers of Commerce and civic bodies.

County 10 Takes Loss on Unsecured Bank Funds

Depositors of Cameron State Bank won a Court of Civil Appeals ruling in Austin this week. Milam County held $34,500 in the bank unsecured and must share losses with other depositors as the court sustains Judge John Watson's injunction against the Banking Commissioner.

City Plans Building Program Under New Federal Act

Mayor Chas. C. Smith said the city council is considering public works projects financed under the Public Works section of the National Recovery Act. Plans are at the formulative stage with no formal applications yet filed. A lengthy council session Monday discussed the overall public improvements program.

Correction to Tax Payor Notice by Roy Law

The Publishers correct an error in last week’s notice to Tax Payers by Roy Law. The second paragraph should state that delinquent costs for 1920 and prior years are due and are not to be remitted. Taxpayers must pay the delinquent costs on these taxees.

Henry Reichert Sharpe Pioneer Dies at 57

Henry Reichert 57 a Sharpe community pioneer died suddenly at his home from a heart attack. Funeral services will be at 2 30 p m Friday at the family residence with interment in Sharpe cemetery. Rev O C Acrey of the First Presbyterian church will conduct. He is survived by his widow two sons Ben F Reichert editor of the Cameron Enterprise and Clay Reichert of Eagle Pass a daughter Mrs Oscar Meeck of San Gabriel and granddaughter Mary Lou Meeck.

Mass meeting for Milam county trustees Friday

A general mass meeting of all Milam county school trustees will be held at City Park Friday starting at 10 a.m. The session will discuss next year's school apportionment amid tax curtailment and state-fund shortfalls. 1200 Cans of Corn Preserved for Winter Use

More than 1200 cans of corn were preserved for winter use Tuesday in a community meeting. On Tuesday June 27 tomatoes will be canned. Cameron residents are asked to provide assistance as county director J. P. Loves reports good results from the county earnings.

Flood Control and Road Building Would Consume Million

L. Van Perkins of the Chamber of Commerce says full funding under the Reconstruction Act would cost about 50 000 per mile for county road work. A county delegation met the highway commission in Austin to push the plan. The budget seeks 500 000 for flood control in Little River and tributaries with government funding expected to cover all but 30 percent. Rural school improvements are listed at 100 000 with districts covering 70 percent under the act.

The Repeal Issue headquarters announce major speakers will address the 4th of July celebration in Cameron. Both sides plan to present arguments on repealing the 18th Amendment before Texas voters. large crowds are expected as seats are built. The event is organized by the American Legion and aimed at informing citizens ahead of the August 26 vote.

Tongate to Return to Cameron About August First

James M. Tongate, local manager for the Cotton Co-Operative Association, will return to Cameron about August 1 to resume duties with the government cotton office. He sends greetings from New Orleans where he is umpiring in the Southern League, a contract he left Cameron to fill this spring.

County requests 60 000 for records building funds

The Commissioners' Court asked the Federal Government for 60 000 to construct a records building under the public works division of the industrial recovery act. The mass meeting had urged 100 000, but the court reduced the request. The county must cover 70 percent of the cost with 30 percent funded by the government. The tax assessor and collector offices are now combined under a 1082 constitutional amendment to be elected in 1934.

Tucker Trials Resume At Belton Monday

Witnesses in the cases against J. Tucker have been summoned to appear in District Court in Belton Monday. At the present term of court four cases were set. A mistrial resulted in the first case to be tried when the jury failed to agree.
