July 4 Celebration Plans In Cameron Texas

The Legion plans a four day July 1 to 4 program in Cameron Texas with band concert carnival ball games at Lawless Green Field and City Park swimming dancing and a major fireworks display. A 3 pm July 4 speaking program will feature state leaders on the repeal of the 18th Amendment ahead of August 26 voting.

Farmers 10 Meet in Cameron Thursday

A Cameron gathering of cotton growers is set for Thursday at 2 p m in the courthouse to discuss plans for government cooperation in destroying cotton acreage. George Banzhaf told the chamber of commerce that contracts are in and the county is organized. meetings are urged across the county at 1 p m. The county can lease 61 000 acres and last year’s average yield was 146 pounds.

Prohibition Bureau to Cut 1300 Jobs in Budget Move

Washington reports that 1300 employees of the Prohibition Bureau will be dismissed by June 30 as part of a plan to cut expenses by four million dollars in the next fiscal year. The attorney general said Budget Director Douglas ordered that four million dollars of the eight million three hundred thousand appropriated be saved, explaining the large layoff.

August 1 Last Date To Transfer Pupils

June and July are the months for pupil transfers between districts when parents opt out of the home district. Transfers cannot be done by the county board and all applications must be filed with the county superintendent by August 1.

Mrs BE M Belk of Dallas and her sister Mrs Barron were seriously injured when their car swerved near Lott last Friday, overturned four times. They were taken to Cameron Hospital by Green Brothers ambulance and remain under care with Barron more gravely hurt.

The report covers the period since July 2 1917 detailing handling of the Road and Bridge Fund warrants. It notes overdrawn accounts at start, later policy to halt new warrants until existing debts paid, and resulting healthy Special Funds. In a Wednesday clash on Lawless Green the Cameron Comets overcame Westphalia with a four run rally after trailing. Westphalia outhit Cameron 9 to 7 as Unk Young allowed eight hits before relief. Ducky Sumerall held the final innings. Errors fueled several runs as Rosebud beat Sluggers 3 0.

Mrs. E L Ramsey Dies in Waco Home

News of Mrs. E L Ramsey's death at her Waco home Friday afternoon June 23 reached Cameron on Monday. She was active in Methodist church work since girlhood and had many Cameron friends who mourn her passing. Her husband once edited the Thorndale Champion.

Milam County to receive state aid funds totaling about 8000

The Milam county school claims for 1931 32 in consolidation bonuses transportation aid and high school tuition will be paid soon after July 1st. Milam totals approx 8000 with Sharp 2500 Milano 2100 San Gabriel 800 Cameron 2000 Rockdale 700 and Thorndale 400. Cameron hopes past due tuition payments will nearly settle 1931 82 obligations.

Reichert buried in Sharpe cemetery with family at his side

Henry Reichert 57, longtime Milam county resident, died June 22 1953 at his home from a heart attack while at the breakfast table. Survived by widow and two sons Ben F Reichert editor of Cameron Enterprise and Clay Reichert of Eagle Lake. He was born in Fayette county in 1876 to German pioneers and moved to Milam with his parents.

Coca Cola Plant Robbed. Safe Loot Reported

The Coca Cola Bottling Company plant was robbed Friday night. The safe was broken open with a sledge hammer and about $10 taken. A fountain pen disappeared from C. E. Akers desk. Sheriff Blaylock’s office was notified.

Prohibition Repeal Campaign Opens in Texas Conventions

Wets and drys held simultaneous conventions in Austin to name complete delegate slates for Texas senatorial districts. Former Attorney General W A Keeling named dry chairman while C McDonald presided over the wets. The August 26 vote will choose wet or dry delegates. November 24 repeal convention set. Internal clashes centered on James E Ferguson. Bailey opposed Ferguson before unity followed McDonald.

Education leaders rally as Cameron drills rural aid rules

More than 200 trustees teachers and citizens met in Cameron for an annual trustee meeting and barbecue. W A Morrison outlined public education history and rural aid changes including attendance thresholds and eight month terms for state aid schools. Milam County faces about 61 000 acres of cotton at risk if farmers back a government price-raising plan with up to 500000 dollars in rental payments to farmers.

Bicycle Riding Academy To Open Here On Saturday

The Cameron Bicycle Academy owned by J. E. Johnson opens at City Park Grounds on Saturday July 1. Offices are on the Lawrence property across from the Auditorium Hotel. Equipment includes Pierce Arrow and Wonder bicycles. The academy offers morning rides for health and evening rides for pleasure.

Roads Committee In Session With Board At Austin Monday

President Perkins reports good roads committee met with the Austin Commission to discuss funding. The Highway Commission policy aims to allocate money under the Commissioners Court direction. A Friday road meeting in Austin will include Judge Jeff T. Kemp and three Commissioners with other attendees. E. Cole of Southern Pacific said railroads will run a bureau in Austin to aid counties in road improvements, which the club voted to accept.

Society Seeks Christian Youth Association Formed

The first meeting to organize a young people's group for a better Christian social life was held at Hefley's Lake on Tuesday at 5 30 PM. About thirty youths attended. Milam County Seeks Reforestation Camp

Milam County Chamber of Commerce announces a reforestation camp proposal to create jobs along the Little River and nearby streams under the public works plan. A detailed application has been sent to Washington to fund channel clearing and timber area improvements. Mrs Perkins notes a records building may be built and leased to the county without bonds or warrants.

Public Industry For Cameron Is Sought

Dr. G. E. Sutton reported a conference with the state sanitary engineer at the Chamber of Commerce meeting. He proposed establishing a county abattoir and canning plant to advance self liquidating public works in Cameron.
