Cameron businessman R. G. Vaughan stood trial in district court Monday June 18 for the murder of Jack Parker of Iowa. Parker was fatally shot at Vaughan's business April 28 1951. A 125 person venire was summoned and witnesses for both sides were heard before the court recessed for a continuance due to a missing witness.
At a regular meeting the mayor and board heard three petitions from August Horstmann and supporters urging a new municipal building on the present site. The Jaycees urged a bond election and a more central location, to give taxpayers a voice before pledging funds. Alderman Perkins withheld action due to an absent member.
Milam County cantaloupes arrive as Spencer Short, famed Marlow truck farmer, sells two loads of about 400 bushels to an out-of-town hauler. Early harvest, ideal weather boost quality. prices strong. Milam crops show potential income despite past mildew losses, with Dallas market around 3.50 per bushel. Harvest pace quickens as season nears full swing.
Funeral services for Lee Braun 60 were set for Saturday June 16 at 11 AM at the Milano First Methodist Church with Rev Edward Ledbetter officiating. Interment follows in Milano Cemetery. Marek Burns Funeral Home in charge. Braun, found dead Thursday morning from a presumed heart attack, was a Santa Fe Railroad telegraph operator and longtime Milano resident active in the Masonic Lodge and Methodist Church. Surviving are his widow, a son in California, a sister in Waco, two grandchildren and two nieces.
Funeral services for Walter Johnson 70 were held Tuesday at 3 PM from String Prairie Methodist Church. Interment followed in String Prairie Cemetery. He died June 18 at the home of Mrs. A L Chesnutt in Calvert. He lived in Milam County since childhood and farmed and ranched before health halted work. Survived by three sons William Frank and D C Johnson of Calvert a daughter Mrs Brentley McNeeley of Calvert and five grandchildren.
S Emory Brogdon, representative of Southwestern Life Insurance, was presented the National Quality Award by the company. The certificate honors his 34 years of service to the public and outstanding record. He is the first Milam County man to receive the award.
L. W. Smith of Cameron Water Department was named chair of the polio clean up campaign announced by L. G. Smith of the Chamber of Commerce. The drive runs June 25 to 29 with a steering committee to be appointed, aiming to extend sewer mains and curb unsanitary conditions amid ongoing polio concerns. A meeting is set for Monday June 18 at 3 PM at the Chamber to finalize plans.
John Helpert Sr 71 died June 20 1951 at his home. Austrian born February 24 1880 he came to the United States at 25 settling near Burlington and became a large landowner in Milam County. Funeral at St Michaels Burlington Friday 8 AM with Rev O Reagan. burial St Michaels Cemetery Cameron funeral by Greens. Survived by widow six children two grandchildren and other relatives.
Lt. Walter W. Redd of Cameron serving with the 24th Infantry Regiment earned the First Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster to the Bronze Star Medal for heroism on February 2, 1951. Amid heavy enemy fire he directed accurate rifle fire and coordinated perimeter defense while overseeing evacuation of the wounded. He has been in Korea since August 1949 and has endured four wounds.
A Starr County farmer and father of six delivered Texas first bale of cotton for 1951. George Schaefer of McAllen drove the pickup that carried the load to Houston, arriving at 1 15 a m Sunday after a 350 mile dash from McAllen Saturday night.
Milam County drafts board announces a July induction call for ten men to report on Wednesday July 11. Inductees will report to Love Field Recruiting Station in Dallas for assignment, with possible entry into Air Corps or Marine Corps. June had reduced quotas and no Milam call. May yielded seven inductions.
A new Farm and Ranch Store will open Saturday July 7 in Santa Fe Town. Owners Seth Corley Jr. and Marlin C. Harris will operate from the Batte Building, selling Red Chain Feeds seeds insecticides fertilizer and other farm supplies. Veterinary and dairy items plus Western Hatchery Chicks will be offered in a broad rural goods lineup.
Mayor A N Green announces a five day clean up drive from June 25 to 29 1951 in Cameron with city council backing. D S Wimberly reports fogging plans using Hearne equipment costing 75 dollars a day and Coca Cola’s Gene Blake to transport gear. Citizens urged to clean up premises to aid effectiveness and public health.
The W. D. Stroud family gathered Sunday at the Worchester home in Salem. Twenty-one families represented, sixty-four attendees, with guests arriving Friday at 2.30 p m and fifty spending Saturday night. Mrs Worchester notes it was lots of fun making beds for a large group. Attendees included Mrs Mattie Bivins Mrs Ola Thrice Miss Clara Ensey and Mr and Mrs Lonnie En.
Citizens National Bank increases surplus by 100000 dollars, bringing capital stock to 100000 and surplus to 400000 for a total capital structure of 500000 dollars. President Mr. Oxsheer Smith says growth, price levels, deposits, and business volume justify the strengthening for depositor protection and service.
