YHS to Undergo Repairs as Board Hires Eight New Teachers

Cameron school trustees approved eight new Negro teachers for Yee High and ordered extensive summer work on the campus. New principal O J Thomas is John Williams, 35, with a Maryland master's degree and Prairie View A&M roots. Additional actions include roofing for 3494 dollars, new exterior doors, and five classrooms received new flooring. A new baseball diamond will be built on the old Milam Liberal Institute site with fencing materials donated by the National Guard. Four Yee High teaching vacancies remain. The board also approved a 25 dollar monthly rent to Turner Grocery and extended the North Fannin East 12th Street lease to July 1, 1960.

State Presents Road Maintenance Agreement To City Council

The Cameron City Council debated a proposed state road maintenance agreement presented by resident engineer Carl D. Zeigler. The plan details responsibilities for city and state on highways through Cameron and consolidates existing pacts. The council also approved a sewer line to Wilson Grain Co and reappointed city health officer Dr. David Shapiro.

Lion Officers To Be Installed At Banquet

The Cameron Lions Club will install new officers Tuesday night at their annual ladies night banquet at The Methodist Church Cameron. Jack Prescott will become president succeeding Louis McKee. Jimmy Wiggs and Richard Williams will be first and second vice presidents. Ben Magness to be replaced as third vice president by moving to Bryan July 1. Tom Boyd secretary treasurer. Last Rites for Judge Gunn Held in Cameron

Judge Ed Gunn 77 former Milam County district attorney was buried in IOOF Cemetery Rockdale after funeral services at Cameron First Methodist Church. He died after weeks of illness and had served as teacher, justice of the peace and city attorney. Survivors include wife, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Weather notes temperate week with rainfall in Cameron

Temperatures ranged in the high 80s to low 90s with a total 1.17 inches of rain in the Cameron area on June 12 and 16. Forecasters expect similar highs this weekend in the upper 80s and low 90s.

Coons Dogs Meet In Unlikely Way

A female coon dog owned by George Hall Tyson of Maysfield sheltered three puppies and three baby raccoons after gathering them from a grown raccoon. The mother dog protected and tended all six young, showing maternal instinct beyond a standard moonlit hunt.

Ben Magness resigns as Chamber president to become assistant sales manager for Humble Oil Co in Bryan effective July 1. Hilliard Thomas becomes acting president. The Chamber approves a holiday schedule closing July 4 Thanksgiving Christmas and New Year’s Day. Bill Burns notes garment factory interest in Dallas area while Cameron competes for the plant. Milam Grain adds equipment and the Wilsons build a new grain elevator and plant.

Milam District jury finds Braden guilty of murder

Charles Braden of Houston is found guilty of murder with malice in the shooting death of Johnnie Sanders Jr. of Fort Worth after a two and a half hour deliberation. The judge sentences him to 20 years in Huntsville State Penitentiary. Braden may appeal within 10 days.

Milam County 4-H Wins State Poultry Contests at A&M

Milam County 4 H Club wins the state poultry judging contest at Texas A M College. Team members Herman Mueck Jr Theodore Fuchs Jeannette Richter and Jeannette Fuchs. Von Gonten Receives Rockdale Rotary Scholarship

Howard Von Gonten valedictorian of the Buckholton 1957 graduating class and Carolyn Kay Conoley Torndale last week won Rockdale Rotary scholarships. They were chosen from 12 seniors from six county high schools. Von Gonten will study mechanical engineering at Texas A&M or Texas University and was active in 4 H Luther League Hope Lutheran Church and school sports.

Masons To Install 11 New Officers Monday Night

The Cameron Masonic Lodge will hold an open installation Monday night in Masonic Hall. Dean White will become Worshipful Master with Ollie G. Chamberlain as Senior Warden and J Z Krall as Junior Warden. KC Lodge Elects Dr. John Boyce Grand Knight

The Cameron Knights of Columbus elected Dr John Boyce grand knight and Joe Humplk deputy grand knight for the coming year. Boyce succeeds Henry Schattle Jr. as grand knight. 42 members attended at KC Hall as a May convention was discussed along with 11 new officers including chancellor Charles Burke and treasurer Frank Heitman.

Milam Guardsmen Return After Successful Cameron Camp

Milam County's Battery C of the 649th AAA Battalion returned to Cameron early Sunday after two weeks of active duty at North Fort Hood and its tenth summer camp. High Army observers rated the unit well and the team collected about $5,700 payroll for the period. They shot down six of seven aerial targets on the last day range firing, with notable hits by SP3 Rudolph Tepera, Pvt Donald Eubanks, Sgt Donald Culp, SP3 John Culp, and Sfc Thomas Sheguit. a base team also formed from several Battery C members.

Milam County Farm Bureau Plans Queen Contest

The Milam County Farm Bureau announces its annual queen contest for girls aged 16 to 22 with a July 25 event on the Cameron Simon George Hall lawn. Registration closes July 5. contestants must be Farm Bureau members and will be judged on appearance, poise and personality. First prize is 15 dollars, runner-up 10 dollars, with regional and state contests to follow in Dallas.

Milam Annexes Yarrellton District to Cameron

Milam County school board annexed the Yarrellton district to the Cameron district affecting about 20 students. A school tax election is set for Saturday June 29 for Cameron and Yarrellton voters to adopt the Cameron district tax rate. Yarrellton tax was 61 cents and would rise to 1.00 if approved. Cameron currently levies 1.50. Pupils will attend O J Thomas School in Cameron this fall. white Yarrellton students already attended Cameron schools.

Funeral Services Held For Rogers

Funeral services were held for J. O. Rogers 78 a retired farmer and school bus driver at Cameron Central Church of Christ with burial in Salem Cemetery. He died Monday in a Cameron hospital and had lived in Minerva Salem and Elm Ridge areas. Survivors include a daughter Mrs Ira Finch Rockdale a son Milton Rogers Minerva three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Green's Funeral Home arranged the services.
