Bill Jenkins, of South College Avenue and West Elm Street, has assembled about 19 000 pieces over twenty years making one of the largest and most complete Indian relics collections. He recalls starting at age 12 near a Cherokee reservation outside Chattanooga and notes corner tang knives are especially scarce, primarily found within 49 miles of Waco, Texas. Paul Walser, former dean of Tyler Junior College, is listed as a student of the collection.
Henry Salone, owner and driver of a car involved in a crash five miles west of Cameron, was jailed on drunkenness and driving while intoxicated charges. Deputy Gunn reported a rear tire blowout prior to the wreck near Buckholts. two injured occupants include Charlie Belle Martin and a unnamed woman. A possible homicide charge may follow as the investigation continues.
Karl A. Waight of Cameron, after completing the Citizens Military Training Camp course in San Antonio, is selected for the Corps Area Rifle Team. He will depart for Camp Perry, Ohio, to compete in national matches from August 24 to September 12. Waight earned this recognition through his marksmanship at Camp Bullis amid other Cameron MT C participants.
George A. Matocha son of Mr and Mrs A J Matocha of Cameron is appointed to take the entrance examination for the Union States Naval Academy at Annapolis. He earned a first alternate appointment through Representative O J Crocs. Matocha is a Cameron TH Yor High School graduate class of 16a5 and did postgraduate work.
Emmett Rutherford and Joe Anderson of Cameron were injured in an automobile accident on the Houston Galveston highway. Both men are in St Joseph's Infirmary in Houston with Rutherford having lost an arm and Anderson severely injured. They were driving a Cameron Fruit Company truck en route to Galveston for freight when the crash occurred.
State Auditor F. Sheffield released a 1935 tax report showing local government taxes totaling 133 million dollars with delinquent taxes around 149 million. Net indebtedness reached 64.7 million with counties owing 160.6 million, cities 223.3 million, and districts 263.8 million across the state.
Dr John L. Denson remains in critical condition at Baylor Hospital Dallas. He was stricken weeks ago, treated at John Sealy Hospital Galveston, then returned home before entering Baylor Hospital for further care.
W R Newton II arrived at 6 10 am on August 14 at Cameron Hospital weighing seven and a half pounds. He is the first Newton grandson in Cameron. Grandfather Dr W R Newton Sr is a noted surgeon and state senator. Father Dr W R Newton II practices locally. Uncle George Mayo Newton serves in the Texas House of Representatives.
The Coca Cola Bottling Company in Cameron introduces Blake's Orange a new drink this week. Mr Henry from the Hearne and Cameron plants endorses its quality pledging California orange juice from Mission groves bottled at the Cameron plant.
The Cameron schools invite new pupils to attend a session in Room 20 at the high school on August 29 at two o clock to map courses of study for the upcoming term. Superintendent Meierth emphasizes prompt attendance to start school duties smoothly. Ralph Wiley joins the Grabein Chevrolet Co. sales team as the firm expands operations and upgrades its plant.
Cameron earns a spot in the semi finals by splitting a Sunday doubleheader with Rosebud, two wins in three games clinching Rosebud’s elimination. In the Sunday game Rosebud won 4 3 behind Marshall and Wright with 7 and 8 strikeouts respectively. Blanco Smith doubled for Cameron and Cotton Franklin homered for Rosebud.
Amateur Hour program presented at Cameron Yoemen Field on August 31 at 8 p m. Band Parents Association sponsors the event with entry blanks available from W B Skelton. Admission 26e, prizes of 5 2.50 and 1 dollar. entrants may choose their act. public address system will broadcast to the stadium seating.
In Cameron the Weems Gin operates a new Ultra modern battery. The Triple-X Conti nent Gin blasts away Wednesday afternoon turning a bale of cotton every ten minutes. The 1936 make gin cleans hulls and extracts improving lint yield and seed turnout.
Cameron Machine Shop, sole agents for John Deere tractors and implements in Milam County, reports brisk business. W. J. Michalka notes John Deere’s historic role and says the brand meets modern farming demands as the Michalka Brothers’ shop expands tractor and implement sales.
The ladies of St Michael's church Altar Society sponsor a sandwich supper on Sunday August 23 at 7 PM on the church lawn. Ice cream cake sandwiches and cold drinks will be sold. Public invited.
