Cameron Volunteer Fire Department Attends State Convention

Delegation from Cameron VFD attended the 78th Annual Convention of State Firemen and Fire Marshals Association in San Antonio from June 8 to June 10. Gunter Hotel hosted. events included speeches by Dr Cayce Moore and Justice Jack Pope, a federal defense admin official address, pumper races, barbecue, band concert, and election of officers for next year. Cameron attendees included Carl Black, Lincoln Mondrik, John Eanes, and team members Jerry Mikula, Edwin Kohutek, June Smalley, David Perkins, Ray Thompson Jr. Also present were Joe and Frank Richter, plus accompanying spouses.

Over 700 Acres of Castor Beans Planted in County

More than 700 acres of castor beans have been planted in Milam county this year per the Production Marketing Administration. Farmers expect to finish sowing this week and hope for 7 to 8 cents per pound on a typical yield of 600 to 1,000 pounds per acre.

Milam County Democratic Executive Committee announced dates and venues for precinct conventions in 46 boxes at 2 30 p m on July 24 and a county convention at Cameron courthouse on July 31 at 3 p m E A Camp Precinct 15 committeeman urged broad participation and defended party democracy amid concerns over Republican influence.

Milam County Probes Deep Test For Wildcat Oil

A new deep test in Milam County targets a 5,000 acre block near the Brazos River east of Jones Prairie. Claude A Williams of Houston plans two tests after the No 1 Otto Patzke wildcat began by Exploration Drilling Company near the Robertson County line. The acreage has not been shot by seismograph crews.

Milam County Highway Plans Move Forward

Milam and Robertson counties will see highway projects under the 1955-56 Consolidated Highway Program. Plans cover bridges, reconstructions, grading and paving on routes 79 190 and 77 near Hearne Rockdale Cameron Milano and Minerva with costs ranging from 85 000 to 600 000 dollars.

Summer Recreation Program Sees 350 Students In Cameron

The Cameron Summer Recreation Program reports about 350 students participated in the first week. Coach Jackson says 32 children aged 9 to 12 signed up for ball games, with 12 to 14 more boys needed to complete teams. It invites more kids to join the activities.

Aldermen Unanimously Veto Telephone Hike

City council defeated a proposed immediate telephone rate increase after public input and private citizen contact. The plan would raise business lines by $1 and private lines up to 75 cents, with another rise tied to the dial system in about 36 months. Mayor Horstmann scheduled a future meeting to resolve meter issues while approving street market area maps for the Post Office and Chamber of Commerce. The street committee was authorized to buy traffic signs.

Bloodmobile Short of Cameron Quota as Donors Fall

Results at the bloodmobile were disappointing with 54 donors present and seven rejected. Richard Moseley, chairman, and Dr. John Bryson said plans are already in place to meet the Cameron quota at September’s Bloodmobile visit. Of 43 written commitments, 23 failed to appear.

Bobby Biskup Awarded Cadet Medals at Allen Commencement

Cadet Sgt Bobby Biskup son of Mr and Mrs Will Biskup of 505 South Traiis Cameron received honors at Allen Military Academy Bryan during the May 24 1954 commencement exercises He earned the Hopkins Medal for proficiency in first year military work and the Astin Medal for excellence in English He is a Phi Theta Kappa member.

Milam County Cotton Acreage Measured By PMA Officials

About one quarter of Milam County 60 000 acres and 1650 cotton farms have been measured under the Production and Marketing Administration plan. PMA says farmers must plant their entire allotment, but a little over one third are actually planted. Officials note cooperative farmers destroying excess cotton. noncompliers face red margin cards and a 17 cents per pound charge on excess.

Places For Name On Ballot Fixed By Committee

Milam County Democratic Executive Committee met in the district court room to draw ballot positions for July primaries. A three member panel handled the process. Seven contested races include county wide posts, the county attorney race with Robert Nelson challenging incumbent J W Miller. Miller drew place 1 and Nelson place 2. Hermat Yezak, incumbent in the 56th district, drew place 1 with Leonard Allen and Frank Haley of Rockdale as opponents.

Milam 4-H Members Win State Awards at 1954 Roundup

Four Milam County 4-H youths earned state honors at the Texas Roundup 1954 at Texas A&M College. Martha Jean Hawke and Evelyn Glaser of Buckholts received Foods Nutrition and Home Improvement certificates. Howard Gonten placed fourth in the State Tractor Contest, with district representation from District 8. James Edward Glaser earned an Animal Husbandry certificate. the group was accompanied by sponsors Mrs. Alice Hughes and J. D. Moore. About 1,600 attendees heard the theme Building Stronger America. The event will be televised on Humble’s Texas in Review next week.

New Population Signs Read 7 172 for Cameron

Cameron installs new population signs at city entrances listing 7 172 residents up from about 5 000. Mayor Horstmann says the figure is understated as many people have moved in since the request to the highway department. Signs based on water connections cannot be changed for two years.

Election Managers Named For Democratic Primaries

The Millam County Democratic Executive Committee named election managers for the July and August primaries. Both primaries require 46 election managers and 170 clerks, while August uses 46 managers and 119 clerks due to lighter workload in completing returns.

Revival at First Baptist Church Led by Rev W N Clark

Rev W N Clark of Pharr Texas will lead a church revival at First Baptist Church starting Sunday June 20 through Sunday June 27. Hines Sentenced to Two Years for Forgery

Orville Dixon Hines received a two year term in the state penitentiary at Huntsville after indictment by the May grand jury for forgery. Sheriff Carl Black delivered him to the penitentiary on Tuesday June 15. The forged $25 check was drawn on A and M Photo Wholesale of College Station and passed to I. B. Bullock of Rockdale.

Funeral services set for Carl Schwarz in Cameron

Carl Schwarz 72 of Sharp died at home after an extended illness. Born June 21, 1882 in Austin County he lived 58 years on Milam Court and farmed. Services 3 p m Thursday at Green Funeral Home Cameron with Rev. John Pietsch Hope Lutheran Buckholts, burial Sharp Cemetery. Two Get Jail Sentences For Poisoning Creek Fish

In Hearne Texas on Saturday Judge Charles C. Smith Jr. sentenced Billy Ray Braden and James Blackmon to 60 days in county jail and fined 50 dollars plus court costs for poisoning fish with rotenone on Little Pond Creek near the Brazos River. Their licenses are revoked for one year. they pled guilty and were linked to Roger Wimberly s land as deputies traced a car and recovered dead fish with help from the Miller county sheriff.
