Army Engineer Capt William L Olbrich Advanced in 1943

Capt William L Olbrich of Burlington received a promotion to captain in March 1943 after enlisting in June 1941. He trained at Fort Leonard Wood Virginia officer training camp and served at Fort Knox and Camp Sutton before command overseas. He is a Baylor and Yee High School graduate, son of Mr and Mrs John Olbrich, with brother Lt Roy Olbrich in the Pacific.

Rockdale FSA Farmer’s 1943 Production Record

The Julius R. Whiteley family of Route 3 Rockdale reports sales of 343.46 from 200 hens with 75 pullets forthcoming, 28 pigs from five brood sows with two more litters due, hog income 719.70 with 60 hogs and 2 for home use, and cattle sales 555 with seven calves on hand and five more calves expected.

Suspended Sentence Given to Milano Man for Assault

J C Richards of Milano was convicted on a guilty plea in district court last week for assault and intent to murder in an attack on his wife. The court imposed a two year suspended sentence after the plea.

Thomas Cheeves Dies in Home at Marlin

Thomas Cheeves a Cameron native and Marlin merchant and banker died at his Marlin home early Friday. He was brother to the late S W Cheeves of Cameron and was once involved in the Cheeves Bros stores across Texas. His sister in law Mrs S W Cheeves and nephew Frank Cheeves are named in Cameron relations. A separate item notes three year old Bobby Johnson of Cameron underwent a tonsil operation early Wednesday. John Thweatt of Maysfield visited Cameron Tuesday.

Rotary club hears Col. Albert Tuckers prison camp talk

Col. Albert Tucker commander of the Hearne military prison camp spoke to Cameron Rotary Wednesday. He described camp life under Geneva rules and noted most prisoners are Tunisian and trained soldiers. He emphasized discipline and good treatment and urged no visitors to the camp to avoid embarrassment.

German Escapees Captured Near Austin After Breakout

Two German prisoners Ludwig Jung and Harold Stalleicken who fled North Camp Hood with others were captured 20 miles west of Austin in hill country. They planned to reach Mexico, hid by day and moved at night. Captured after a Cedar Park witness alerted station operator P. E. Hannett and R. Faubion. They had been at liberty five days and were to be returned to Camp Hood.

Family Succeeds With FSA Funds In 1943 Egg Enterprise

The David V Small family of Rockdale Route 2 used FSA funds to buy baby chicks and feed. In the first four months of 1943 they sold 551.40 dollars worth of eggs from 265 hens, spent 220 dollars on feed, and posted a net profit of 331.40 dollars or 1.25 dollars per hen. Mrs Jack Henderson is recovering after an operation at Newton Memorial Hospital. Frank Henley of Duke Ayres made a business trip to Marlin and planned to return Thursday.

Air Corps Volunteer Leo Majek Missing From Duty

Leo Majek joined the Army Air Corps in January 1949 and was stationed at Moffett Field California. He was reported as still at the field but may have been transferred. Majek born at Marak is 20 years old and entered service before the Selective Service Law and before Pearl Harbor.

Warren Johns Funeral Held Here Friday

Warren Johns aged 60 died suddenly at 6 p m Thursday June 10 1948 from a heart attack at the home of his daughter Mrs Clifford G Swift in Cameron He moved from Tyler two months ago for heart care with Dr Swift He is survived by his widow son Herndon Johns daughter Mrs Clifford G Swift and three grandchildren Funeral services were held at 5 p m Friday at All Saints Episcopal Church in Cameron with interment at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Funeral Services For Mrs Virginia Foster

Mrs. Virginia Carolyn Foster 40 died June 1 at Cameron Hospital after a major operation. Funeral held June 12 at 3 p m in Rice Community Cemetery. Survived by husband I L Foster and three children Dorothy Les James Clayton and John William Foster plus several siblings. Rev C W Sanders presided. Fort Clark Native Seth Newton Corley Enlists

Seth Newton Corley is stationed at Fort Clark near Del Rio Texas. He volunteered for the army in November 1942 and joined the Quartermaster Corps reporting to Fort Sam Houston. Corley, 26, Baylor University graduate, is from Buckholts and is the son of Mr and Mrs S M Corley. He is a cousin of Lt Frank Newton a prisoner of the Germans. Lt Newton was shot down in the Mediterranean aboard the Fortress Bomber San Antonio Rose with most crew lost.

Marlin 10 Gets Navy Hospital Belief Here

The United States Government will build a 10 percent bed Naval Hospital at Marlin, with Congressman Poage backing Marlin to receive the project. Senator Connally and Poage presented to Admiral Hand, arguing Marlin’s favor, while Houston and Waco also sought the hospital. Local mineral waters are cited as a boost, though Milam also offers similar waters.

Service Man Nichols at Camp Hood in Quartermaster Unit

Nichols, 24, stationed at Camp Hood with the Quartermaster Corps, has seven years in the Army since enlisting in 1986 at Fort Sam Houston Set. He is married to Marie Lea and accompanies her at Camp Hood. He is one of three Nichols brothers in uniform, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. V. Nichols of Cameron, born in Leon county and educated at Sharp. The family moved to Sharp years ago and still resides there. The other two sons, J. R. and Frank Nichols, are in the Navy. Miss Betty Jo Smith of Austin, visiting her grandmother Mrs. N. H. Butts, will teach at the summer Bible School in Austin at the First Presbyterian Church starting Monday.

Milam FSA families boost farm production across eggs milk and meat

Ninety nine Farm Security Administration families in Milam County report sharp gains in eggs and poultry sales totaling $18 281 15 and $482 40 in poultry plus 713 pigs from 212 s ons with 149 more to come. They expect 8 18 pigs to feed out and 275 to butcher for home use along with $1 749 52 in milk sales and $3 590 52 from cattle. They also project 45 calves for home use as they expand production for family use and market.
