Milam County crop notes signal sorghum lead in acreage
Grain sorghums maturing and corn in roasting ear stage indicate summer. Milam County expects sorghum harvest around July 10 with about 45 000 acres planted last year and a likely increase this year. Cotton blooms appear in early fields and a bale is expected in August. The Heart of Texas Dairy Herd Improvement Association meets June 26 in Cameron with Dr. R E Leighton as speaker. Local weed control tests show Banvel D damaging sorghum in some cases, prompting calls for further testing and management guidance.
