Rainfall Slight in Cameron Area Amid Central Texas Showers

A trace of rain fell in Cameron while Central Texas saw up to 4.25 inches in Waco. The City Weatherman reported precipitation was so slight that measurement was impossible. Temperatures over seven days ranged from 56 to 93. May rainfall in Cameron totaled 0.59 inch with most activity northeast of Cameron.

Tragic Drowning Of Mary Ruth Lister Near Yarrelton

Mary Ruth Lister, six, drowned in a 15 foot tank on the Buster Griffin farm near Yarrelton. Cameron firemen and National Guardsmen searched for nearly three hours before the body was recovered. Services were held at Dorsey Funeral Home with burial in Cameron Cemetery.

Brisbane scientist John Mann of Queensland government tours Cameron seeking MECAS SATURNINA. He aims to collect about 25 000 insects for study to combat Noogoora burr affecting Australian wool worth around 835 million dollars. Hot dry conditions persist in Cameron and vicinity. Temperatures ranged from a 56 degree low to a 96 degree high. The mercury hit the mid- 90s in five of the past seven days.

Starrett Hickman Named New Cameron Councilman

The Cameron City Council selected Starrett Hickman a retired businessman to fill Place 3 after Richard Moseley’s resignation. Candidates included C E Curtis Lincoln Monick and Homer Allen as other nominees. The council also cleared liens on Elith Street to fund paving from North Lee to North Jackson and authorized a special ordinance to reassess Elith Street property to speed paving near Ben Milam School. Curtis urged dust controls on E 16th Street.

Defense Granted Postponement In Shuffield Trial

District Judge W. C. Wallace granted a continuance in the murder trial of Hubert W. Shuffield 66 of Cameron and reset jury action for 9 am Monday July 17. Witnesses listed include Marvin Lee McCullough James Lopez and Billy John Simmons who are subpoenaed but unavailable for the June 5 date. Shuffield is charged with murder with malice in the death of Jesse Kirk Jr found shot April 14 in Cameron.

The Western Week Queen Contest committee announced rules for the July 8 to 15 event and opened contestant registration at the County Judge's office or Milam Courthouse District court reporter's office. Rosebud Hosts Freeman Speech At City Event

Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman will deliver a major policy address in Rosebud at Rosebud High School Stadium on June 17. Cameron Guardsmen will manage parking on a 30 acre site as a parade and bands accompany the event. Freeman, 43, former Minnesota governor, will hold a post speech press conference at D Brown Library.

Abilene Man, 27 Gets Eight Years for Burglary

Mack Charles Miller, 27, of Abilene, was sentenced to eight years in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty to burglarizing the Highway Package store in Thorndale. He admitted taking $350 in liquor and transporting it to Abilene. the Thorndale shop had been burglarized before, and items linked to other cases were found.

The Bar-B-Q Pit at the K of C Hall burned Thursday, a grassy back of Hill Top Cafe fire Tuesday at 1 45 pm, another grass fire at the Country Club around 5 45 pm, a body found in a tank near Yearrelton at 9 pm, and a grass fire at 1800 North Washington Wednesday at 12 30.
