Milam County Diverts Thousands of Acres Under 1961 Plan

Milam County farmers signed up 1171 for the 1961 one year feed grain plan representing about 70 percent of eligible producers. The program diverted 22 996 acres of grain sorghum and 11 165 acres of corn with advance payments totaling 331 462 dollars. Final payments depend on land measurement and reports.

Walter Streicher Dies at 54 in Cameron

Funeral services were held Tuesday for Walter Streicher 54 of Cameron who died Sunday at home from a heart attack. Rev H M Bowley presided at Green Funeral Home with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Survivors include wife a son Billy of Cameron a daughter Georgia Ann Baskin of Houston father Arnold Streicher of Cat Springs brother Leon Streicher of Houston and three sisters Minnie Stigall San Gabriel Lillie Moore California and Elizabeth Oaks Cat Springs.

Rites Thursday for Walter Hagemeister

Funeral services for Walter J Hagemeister 54 were held at Hope Lutheran Church Buckholts with Rev John Pietsch officiating. Burial followed in Buckholts cemetery. He died Wednesday in a Temple hospital born January 3 1907 near Shiner married Lorene Dueser of Cameron in 1941 had lived in Rogers since 1930 and was survived by his wife mother brother and two sisters.

Weather Notes Rain Totals Hit Cameron Area Last Week

Rains brought 1.13 inches Friday and 0.14 inches Saturday in Cameron region with lighter showers earlier in the week. Highs reached 94 and lows 68 humidity stayed high. Also notes Vacation Church School at The First Methodist Church runs June 19 to 23 from 9 to 11 a.m.

Cameron School Board voted 5 to 1 to eliminate seventh and eighth grade football citing risk of permanent injuries. A Citizens Advisory Group will meet June 24 to discuss O. J. Thomas School crowding with at least four additional classrooms needed.

Snakes and Bees Draw Attention in Cameron

Bees swarmed from a column at 408 North Travis as workmen dismantled a colonial front in Cameron. Buck Slavik killed a seven foot rattlesnake on his rural farm. Douglas Marburger and Johnny Mann, both nine, killed a five foot King Snake on the Cameron Country Club road.

Queen Contest registration opens for Western Week candidates

Western Week officials announce registration for the Queen Contest. Candidates age 16 who are single and residents of the Independent School District may enter by 5 p.m. Friday, July 7. They will ride in the Saddle Club Horse Show parade on July 8 and will be judged at 10 a.m. that day with Miss Western Week announced that night in Cameron.
