Graduation exercises Friday evening June 2 marked the Ada Henderson Grammar School graduation. Valedictorian Winnelle Kidd and salutatorian Helen Ryan led a program at Yee High School with music by Connie Strickland and Billie Wilson. Louie Turner won the American Legion scholarship award. Rev. Ed E. Mace gave the address. T. A. Fisher awarded diplomas.

Cameron Firemen Attend Texas State Meeting

Cameron Fire Department plans to attend a Texas Firemen convention in Corpus Christi for three days led by Chief Monta Thomas. The racing team includes Oscar Schiller and members J C Brashear Jr Albert Richter Zeke Brod Pete Kunz Jerry Mikula Joe Smith. Delegates Joe Richter and Jack Henderson will attend with Will Cook Fire Marshal joining as a delegate.

Baptist Vacation Bible School Begins Friday

The Baptist church opens its Daily Vacation Bible class on Friday June 9 with registration at 4 p m. Classes run Monday to Friday from 8 to 11 for several weeks. Children ages 5 to 17 are invited. Lead teachers include Mrs J W Bowman beginners, Miss Winnie Henderson primary, Mrs Roy Law juniors, Don Slocomb intermediates, and James Markham principal.

Witt Signals Support for Repeal and Beer Legalization

Lieutenant Governor Edgar E. Witt announced in Austin he would back repeal of the 18th Amendment and also favor legalizing beer in Texas. He suggested cheap beer might reduce whiskey use. The rest of the text appears to be an art description and a byline mentioning Winnie Lynch Rockett.

Mattern Forced Down In Siberia During Around-The-World Flight

Texas aviator Jimmy Mattern was forced to land about 600 miles beyond Omsk while attempting a solo flight around the world. After more than 20 hours in the air, Moscow received word of the incident with Soviet authorities sending a rescue plane. It was believed the setback might end his attempt.

Community Canning For Winter Relief Campaign Planned

Next Tuesday June 1 a community canning day begins in Cameron to stockpile beans and peas for winter relief. Volunteers gather at Yee High School basement before 8 am with seven precincts coordinating under J. P. Love and local supervisors.

Texas Honors Centennial Coin Bill Passed By Senate

A bill to coin half dollar pieces commemorating Texas independence in 1836 was approved by the senate and sent to the house. Senator Connally is the author. The proposal envisions a 1936 issue to mark the centennial.

Isaacs of Rockdale Named Milam County Auditor

Conn R. Isaacs of Rockdale is appointed Milam County Auditor to replace Giles L. Arriett whose term ends July 4 1933. Announcement by Judge Graham Gillis on Saturday June 3 notes Isaacs, a former Rockdale banker, has served with the Federal Land Bank in Houston for six months and will assume duties July 4. Arriett will complete 16 years in office when his term ends in July.

Good Will Tour 18 San Gabriel Friday

The Cameron Chamber of Commerce good will trip schedule progresses with visits to San Gabriel on Friday and Minerva next Tuesday. A new date for Milano is planned soon with other towns announced as conflicts with school commencement caused postponements. W. M. Cameron Municipal Band Opens Summer Concerts at City Park

The Cameron Municipal Band begins a weekly concert series on Thursday night June 15 at City Park. Francis Cox, band master, prepares a special opening program. The public is invited to attend.

State Loses in First Attempt To Convict Tucker in Bank Case

The state failed to convict J C Tucker on embezzlement charges tied to Cameron State Bank's closure on December 17 1931. A Belton jury could not agree and was dismissed with nine for acquittal and three for conviction. Trial resumes June 14 at Belton with four cases set for that term.

110 Seniors Graduate From Yoe High School

An open air commencement at Yoe High School Monday night, June 5th, celebrated the largest senior class with 110 graduates. The event was marred by a seat section collapse injuring several spectators, mostly children, while attendees watched the program proceed.

Former Publisher Dr C W McCune Visits Cameron

Dr. C W McCune, once The Herald publisher and founder of the Texas Farmers Alliance, arrived in Cameron on Thursday en route to Sabine Pass for vacation. He discussed Texas progress and Cameron Milam county history with T S Henderson. He led the Alliance from Cameron to national leadership and later served as a national political figure before retirement as a Methodist minister.

Price Pioneer of Milam County Dies at 76

M W Price aged 76 native of Alabama and Milam County pioneer died at his Cameron home June 6 1983 at 6 20 pm after years of declining health. Born March 4 1857 in Farrell Alabama he settled in North Elm Milam County later moving to Cameron in 1914 to aid his children’s education and future. He lived a life of unselfish deeds and civic virtue leaving a strong legacy to family and community. (See PRICE on page 4)

Appeals Filed In Booker Murder Case In Texas

Attorneys for Clarence Booker, a 20 year old black man, appeal his December 1952 murder conviction. The case moved from Cameron to Austin after fears of violence if tried locally. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in Austin will hear the appeal as the final chapter.

Former Cameron Child Wins Student Honors

Little Miss Charlotte Stidham, daughter of Mr and Mrs Syd Stidham of Houston, earned the highest honors in Travis school Houston for the entire four years. She was introduced to the audience at graduation and had limited early schooling before returning to Houston to study.

Church at Maysfield Destroyed by Flames

The Methodist church in Maysfield built over fifty years ago burned Friday afternoon, with the cause still undetermined. The structure was a historic center for local church and community activities. T. W. Reed, a Temple businessman, visited Cameron on Monday.

Baylor Professor Delivers Talk at 1934 Graduation

Rev. O B Herring, Baylor University Bible professor, gave the baccalaureate sermon at First Methodist Church. The 110 seniors, largest class in the school, gathered at Judge Kemp's home before marching to the church. The Junior Class sang The Lord Is My Shepherd and scripture was read by Rev N D Timmerman. Ice fruit punch and a close registration book were provided on the lawn.

Americas Oldest Mother Nah Thrie Tla Dies At 110

Nah Thrie Tla, an Apache woman reputed as Americas oldest mother and once noted for her youth at play with Geronimo, died at 110 in Lawton Oklahoma. She was honored by the National Federation of Women's Clubs in 1982 as Americas oldest mother.
