Voters face a $14,000 bond to acquire 100 acres for Cameron Country Club with golf course lakes and a swimming beach. City funds cover payments with no tax increase, using grants and a public park plan to boost entertainment and public access. If approved, ownership shifts to the city, benefiting all residents.

Brazos River Flood Control Committee Formed

A 50 member Brazos River Flood Control Committee was created to push rapid completion of flood control dams on the lower Brazos and its tributaries. The panel includes Bel and Milam counties and other members with interest in dams on the Leon River and other areas.

A new tire firm will open Friday in the Waller building next to the B and B Studio. Owner W F Littletoen of San Antonio and manager Ted Curry announce Pennsylvania tires and Excel batteries. The Cameron Rubber Company will offer exchange deals and ties to a large retreading plant, selling Pennsylvania tires.

Chairman Roy Sanderford said 583 men named at Belton gathering will convene in Cameron Friday night June 3 in the Chamber of Commerce offices. The group focuses on building a dam across the Leom river near Belton as part of Little River flood control, a Brazos tributary.

Big Bass Landed in Ishing Fete Here by Wardlow

Tom Wardlow of Central Freight Lines stirred fishing interest by landing a six pound seven ounce large mouth black bass at Faulkner Lake north of Cameron on Wednesday May 18. The fish was mounted by Reed Rogers at Western Auto. Wardlow noted Bill Burns also fished but offered little challenge.

The Cameron Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee with Home Demonstration Agents and the Department of Vocational Agriculture of Yee High School plans poultry culling and disease control demonstrations. Love couple to tour Illinois and Kentucky this summer

Rev and Mrs J P Love depart Monday for a summer vacation traveling through Illinois and Kentucky. They will visit relatives and friends and be joined by Mrs Leslie Brown, Mrs Love’s sister, who will accompany them and visit relatives before returning later in the season.

Newton to retire from House after term ends

Representative Geo Mayo Newton announced he will not seek re election and will retire at term end. Representative John Collins of Waco declared for Milam county State senate seat to succeed the late Dr. W R Newton. St Rita’s Circle of St Monica’s plans a Sunday afternoon supper at 5 on the church grounds. The event includes entertainment and games with no sale prices. Proceeds go to beautifying the church grounds, inviting the public to attend.
