Ernest Walston, a war veteran, was injured in an automobile wreck near Cameron two weeks ago and has been moved from Cameron Hospital to the Legion Hospital in Kerrville.
Sam Darden of Waco announces candidacy for State Senator to succeed the late Dr. W. R. Newton. A 35 year old attorney and former Assistant District Attorney of McLennan County, Darden is married with one child and has prior service as City Attorney for Waco. He graduated from Baylor in 1928 and spent a decade in public service drafting laws and practicing law.
Senate candidate Sam Darden will begin his speaking campaign Friday night at 7 o clock on radio station W A C O. He seeks to boost visibility ahead of the state senate race and will outline his platform during the broadcast.
Joe A. Slavik of Marak a farmer and businessman announces his candidacy for Representative from Milam county to succeed George Mayo Newton who retires. He notes no prior office runs and thanks supporters from across the county while inviting continued backing.
Chairman Fudd G. Davis announced that the Mi lam County Democratic Executive Committee will meet in District Court room in Cameron on Monday June 20 to set a speaking schedule for candidates and determine assessments to cover primary election costs. He said dates will be scheduled and urged candidates to attend. June 18 is the last filing date for county and precinct offices.
Cameron fans plan a benefit doubleheader Sunday to aid Ladis Matula, Cameron mound ace injured in an auto crash while returning from a pitching assignment at Bryan. Val Verde will join the games, with proceeds aiding Matula. Tickets 40 cents in advance, first game at 2 15.
Elm Ridge and Ad Hall will meet in Cameron on Sunday at 3 p m for a baseball game.
Walter B Smith Jr son of Mr and Mrs W B Smith Sr of Rockdale announces this week his candidacy for representative 64th district Milam county in the Texas legislature subject to the Democratic primary on July 23 He enters after George Mayo Newton withdrew and cites friendship experience in Austin as his background and reason to run.
Cameron voters rejected the plan to buy the Cameron Country Club property for a city park by a 70 vote margin. Uncertainty remains on property disposition after the golf club lease ends and whether the city will accept a federal grant for a lakeside swimming pool amid water supply concerns.
Mrs. Susanna Sanders died June 3 1938 at 12 05 pm in the home of her daughter Mrs B F Bonds from a heart ailment after several weeks illness. A Mississippi native and last of a nine child family she leaves daughter Mrs B F Bonds and nephew W K Matthews with Miss Agnes Matthews as a survivor.
John Copley druggist from New Camer on Drug Company spoke to the Rotarians about narcotics. He outlined the history of opium use, the laws and systems fighting it, and noted origins outside China with India and Java as key supply sources. Rev. Vernon G Miles join as luncheon guest.
Attorney General William McCraw, a Governor hopeful, will address supporters on the Cameron courthouse lawn at 8 p.m. Saturday June 25. A. J. Lewis noted the first local appearance after opening his campaign in Arlington and said arrangements are being made for a wide hearing.
Ladis Matula ace pitcher for Cameron is hospitalized after a Sunday crash on the Brazos bridge. A timber from the railing injured him severely. doctors fear possible arm amputation. Others in the car include Cliff Werlla Geo Matula and Will Worcester. the vehicle was nearly wrecked and traffic halted.
The Cameron Theatre week features top film talent including Bette Davis and Henry Fonda in Jezebel a Civil War era drama. Also showing are Burns and Allen Martha Raye Betty Grabble and Peter Lorre in Mr Moto's Gamble along with Victor McLaglen Louise Hovick in Saturday gala previews.
Joe Bill White of Troop 53 Cameron earned the Eagle Scout rank at a Rockdale Court of Honor Friday night. Judge Graham Gillis presented the badge before Mrs. Leona G. White. George W. Powell of the Heart of Texas Council spoke on Eagle responsibilities, noting that only about 0.5 percent reach this rank. Troops from Rosebud Cameron and Rockdale held the ceremony at Rockdale High School with county advancement chairman Gillis presiding and District Commissioner Jd. W. Haygood assisting. Chas F. Rutledge, new field scout executive for Bell and Milam counties, was present.
