Buckholts receives a 99000 grant from FHA and earlier a 351000 FHA loan to build the towns first sewer system. The project will convert 161 residences and 15 businesses from septic tanks. Milano formed a town council in recent months to address similar needs in the southeast.
Fifty one Cameron area youths labeled economically disadvantaged enroll in a summer work experience project under Manpower funded by about 50 000 in federal CETA funds. They will be paid 2 30 an hour for 40 hours weekly over eight weeks starting June 2, with assignments across Cameron Rogers Gause Buckholts Newton Hospital St Edward Hospital Cameron Day Care Center and local offices.
Milam communities over the past decade have installed water systems forming a county network. Buckholts and Milano gain upgrades as pipes and sewer work proceed. Milam centers shift toward development with Shell mining and oil finds, tied to Cameron and major highways.
Robert W. Pearson will join the law firm of John B. Henderson Jr. in Cameron effective June 1. He earned a 1972 Baylor Law School JD and held roles at Baylor Law Review and the Student Bar. Pearson served as an Army JAG captain from 1973 to 1975 and has been an assistant district attorney in McLennan County. He is married to Lynn Smith Pearson. they have a son, Arney.
A new service in Cameron enables calling the Temple Social Security office at no charge by dialing 0 and requesting Enterprise 8 6795. The Temple office connects for free and most claims by phone. in person service remains in Cameron Tuesdays at the courthouse and the district office is in the Poage Federal Building downtown Temple.
Two Cameron men face murder charges after Ignacio Reyes, 34, of Minerva died from stab wounds at St Edward Hospital after a party at Fiesta Grounds Cameron. Pete Borgas, 18, and Johnny Borgas, 21, were jailed with $10,000 bonds each. Ciilio Reyes was treated and released.
Folk festival organizers announce a multi day event starting next week at the Mexican Fiesta Grounds with a queen’s contest Thursday night. June 10 12 activities include music from multiple genres, ethnic dancing, arts booths, a parade with a secret marshal, and a cow chip throwing contest sponsored by the Evening Lions with CYO involvement and extensive food offerings.
Milam County ASCS office opens June 6 to 17 to register beef producers who produced cattle in 1976 for the July referendum on a beef research and information order. Each production entity gets one vote. mail or in person registration available. final list posted June 22 with challenges possible. Buck notes a varied event schedule at the Fete Buckholts grounds with races, dances, and a $99,000 FHA grant for Buckholts’s sewer and water system improvements.
The Milano city council, in its first regular meeting after incorporation, granted Texas Power & Light Co. a franchise to operate within city limits. TP&L Manager Larry Morrow reported an 11.3 percent overall rate increase approved by the Texas Public Utilities Commission. The council designated Citizens National Bank of Cameron as city depository and The Rockdale Reporter as official notices newspaper. It also authorized the mayor to order an ordinance book minutes book and an official seal for the city.
Optimism runs high in Lott as preparations move toward opening a doctors clinic on July 1 in the former city library. Four Rosebud doctors will staff it, with one in Lott five days weekly, sharing time with Rosebud Medical Services Clinic.
