Rockdale Homecoming Association draws 300 to 400 former residents from across Texas and beyond to Fair Park on Sunday June 5. An informal gathering with lots of visiting time is planned. The theme echoes the Chamber of Commerce slogan Rockdale A Future as Big as Texas.
This month residents recall a 20 year flood that dumped up to 16 inches of rain, turning Harris Creek into floodwaters. The surge swamped over 75 percent of McGregor cemetery, toppled tombstones, damaged many graves, and washed downstream 22 caskets and vaults.
Georgetown voters approve 1.8 million dollars in bonds for construction renovation at three schools and a bus maintenance shed and parking area. A second proposition to fund an all weather track fails 554 to 752.
Aluminum Company of America and the United Steelworkers of America sign a three year contract covering about 10 000 employees at 10 locations including Alcoas Rockdale Works. Wages rise 80 cents per hour plus 15 cent first year COLA and a weekly price linkage. The agreement creates a three tier income security program with a rule of 65 and adds a new vision care plan. Negotiations with the Aluminum Workers International Union continue for eight other Alcoa sites.
U S representative W R Poage will not require radiation after cancer surgery. Dr William Fouty at Bethesda Naval Hospital says the cancer was limited to the removed colon section. Poage may return to limited office work in about a month and could be home this week. A Dallas paper report about him resigning was denied by his spokesman who said no announcement was made.
Cameron police said Eunice Scott suffered a gunshot wound in the foot while unloading a .22 pistol Thursday night. She reported the gun discharged. Cameron school trustees met in special session, toured buildings, voted to paint Ada Henderson interiors and seek carpet estimates.
A May 20 barbecue supper at the Methodist Fellowship Hall in Cameron honored John A. Smith of Cameron for many years of service to the Farm Bureau. Smith has served as district VII director for seven years, a region of 15 Texas counties, with about 100 guests including Texas Farm Bureau leaders and district officials. The event featured a silver tray engraved with district counties and a dried floral arrangement for Mrs. Smith.
A Cameron child about 3 years old remained in intensive care at Scott and White Hospital Friday morning after a car struck him Thursday near the 600 block of East 16th Street. Ernest Galvan Jr. suffered head injuries. Nathan Ewing of Cameron drove the car. Officer Leonard Doskocil called the crash unavoidable.
The Central Texas Council of Governments executive committee adopts a Criminal Justice Plan listing Milam County Probation Department funding and regional high and low speed teletype networks as top priorities. The committee also reviews Cameron's Selective Enforcement Program application to the Texas Office of Traffic Safety.
Buckholts seeks a 99000 Farmers Home Administration grant to fund its first sewer project after bids proved too high. Mayor Richard Crowe says a Washington decision was due in early May, with no word yet. The town already has a 351000 FHA loan and has delayed contracts while awaiting approval.
Milam County schools face slow sign ups for the Folk Fete senior queen with only three contestants, while 18 girls have entered the junior contest.
