Geneva Men Start Red Cross
Adrienne Farrell reports on the origins of the Red Cross from Henry Dunant’s Solferino moment to the ICRC’s early years. The piece traces the Geneva committee’s evolution into a 25 member body and outlines troubles from mediation roles in hijackings to terrorism and prisoner treatment. It notes Marcel Naville’s term and the Munich 1972 crisis where ICRC faced criticism for its stance.
