Freddie Lee Fleming Jr. 18 and Veronica Maldonado 16, both of Somerville, were found dead Friday evening in a demolished car that plunged from the State Highway 36 Loop overpass into a creek bed by the Santa Fe railroad tracks.
Georgetown billing clerks report the Lower Colorado River Authority will push for a rate rise again in September after a 30 percent increase request was denied under the President's 90 day price freeze. City buys power from LCRA for local distribution as Georgetown's kilowatt hours rose by more than one million from May to June this year.
A Saturday afternoon gunfight outside the Hot Pants Inn in Hearne left Walter Redman wounded and Leon Stonehams jailed on a charge of assault with intent to murder. Redman was hospitalized at Hearne General Hospital before transfer to Scott and White in Temple. Stonehams is held in Robertson County jail on $10,000 bond.
The Burleson County Board of school trustees voted to annex Deanville Common School District into Caldwell Independent School District effective immediately. Unofficial June 30 election in Deanville showed 177 to 77 in favor of annexation by Caldwell district over Somerville.
Rockdale council heard two board of equalization members say city property values on the tax rolls are unequal and merit a full revision. They proposed hiring a professional appraisal firm to revalue properties. An alderman warned reappraisal would raise many valuations and trigger taxpayer opposition.
Belton will operate a city ambulance funded by Heartfield Funeral Home which will end its private service on September 1. The city manager outlined a plan after weeks of study following the notification. The Belton council will run the service with two ambulances. In Temple it is now legal to turn right on red after a stop, with cautious proceed on all intersections. The statewide right on red law becomes effective August 27.
Cameron residents heard proposals from the planning commission and city council including a new city hall, street expansions, annexation, parks, housing, and upgrades to water, sewer, and drainage. The pilot Annual Arrangements program allocates about 123000 dollars once funds release.
The 1974 Folk Fete at KC Hall, led by Charles Handle, named new officers at a dinner attended by about 50. Outgoing President Charles Kunz thanked Cameron community supporters as the two day event drew more than 10 000 attendees. Net income reached 657 08 with a balance of 1 313 19 after carryover from 1972. Major income came from armory admissions and beer sales while expenses included booth supplies and electrical work.
Nell Vina Randale 38 of Maysfield died after apparently knocking over a 410 shotgun in a kitchen while cleaning. Justice of the Peace William Pagach ruled the death accidental. Randale leaves two children and her parents and was taken to a Hearne funeral home.
