James Ray Dodson, a submarine veteran of two years in the Pacific, is home on leave from the Navy. He arrived exhausted from the West Coast to be with his father J. R. Dodson, whom he had not seen since enlistment. At 17 he served aboard a famous submarine credited with 18 Japanese vessels including a cruiser and five destroyers, and he spent Christmas 1942 off Japan's coast waiting for ships. He wears service stripes and speaks little of his exploits.
