Milam County Agent J. D. Moore reports dry hot conditions harming upland cotton while bottom land holds moisture. Boll weevil counts at Angell Brown 44 percent, Edwin Fischer Buckholts 31 percent, P. Ward Fuchs Community 40 percent. Stink bugs threaten truck crops and nearby cotton fields. DDT and Toxaphene dust or spray recommended with 5 day intervals.
The city will fog in the next several days using a fly and skeet style machine attached to the Water Department truck. DDT chlorodane and diesel oil will be the base ingredients, with the operation running between midnight and 6 AM to avoid traffic. The Chamber of Commerce and VFW Auxiliary funded and organized the effort with L. W. Smith coordinating with health and city officials.
County Attorney Ed Gunn attended the annual Homecoming at Pleasant Hill on Sunday and called the day most enjoyable.
Walter Sharpe newly elected president of the Rotary Club will assume leadership on Wednesday July 11 with installation at a noon luncheon. Officers include secretary-treasurer Richard Moseley and vice-president Bill Burns. new directors Rev. John C. Solomon Dr. Clifford Swift W T Hanes and Bill McIntosh. Sharpe has long been active in church and civic life and is expected to lead a successful year.
A justice of the peace returned a verdict of murder and death by own action in the deaths of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Kitzler. The accused allegedly shot his wife in the head with a .22 rifle then killed himself. Sheriff investigators followed the daughter’s report of finding the father alone with locked doors. Funeral services were held July 8 at Marek-Burns Chapel with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. Surviving relatives include several named Kalenskey and Neumeyer family members and William Kitzler.
Self employed individuals should not file quarterly Social Security tax returns for employees in July. James B. Marley of the Austin Social Security office explains that self employed people come under Social Security only if net income is 400 dollars or more per year. Usually net income cannot be determined until year end, so a single annual report is required with the income tax return. The collector of Internal Revenue will furnish the form.
Washington July 10 The Defense Department boosted August draft calls from 22000 to 35000 men including 7000 for the Marines. About 34000 more will be called in September with 28000 to the Army and 6000 to the Marine Corps. The Air Force continues to rely on volunteers. The Marine Corps needs draftees to meet its strength plans. Two National Guard divisions the 28th and 43rd are alerted for movement to Europe this Fall to reinforce Eisenhower’s defense force.
Six men from Milam County will be inducted into the armed forces on August 15, per August G Kunz Milam County Draft Board No 92 chairman This marks the counties smallest induction since the Korea war began and the 12th call since June 1950 The group will depart Cameron on August 14 at 1 30 PM via Central Tex Bus Line to Dallas Recruiting Station for processing and further assignments
The annual Ben Arnold old settler reunion will be held at Cameron City Park on Sunday July 15. All are invited to attend and bring a basket lunch. The event is a longtime community attraction drawing local residents.
Mrs. A. J. Conner and her children from Dickinson are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Chas Matula and their family this week.
R L Batte Sr 87 died at his home the Sycamores Friday July 6 after eleven months of declining health. A rancher, industrialist and land owner he built a large Central Texas empire and owned Cameron Cotton Oil Company for 24 years. Funeral 5 PM Sunday July 8 at family residence with Dr Mark Magers officiating, interment Oak Hill Cemetery. He leaves widow Lelia McAnnally Batte a son R L Batte Jr two daughters Mary Belle Batte and Mrs Joe Hickman and a large extended family.
June report shows Cameron Water Department with a net profit near 3000 dollars. Over the past year, the department earned 26922.47, meeting expectations and suggesting bond retirement as planned. Monthly revenues totaled 4844.56 with net after expenses 2837.60. Swimming pool income last two months netted 241.15, aiding sanitation improvements.
Agnes Barosh 87 of Buckholts died July 11 at home after months of illness. A European born immigrant, she lived in Milam and Bell counties, member of KJT Lodge. Funeral at family home Thursday at 8 A M then St. Morak Church rites, Rosary Wednesday night. Interment Marak Cemetery. Survived by seven daughters, two sisters, 20 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Kirk and Shirley and Mr. and Mrs. Howell Kirk with children of Austin are as guests in the home of Mrs. Zelma La Cook for several days.
Mrs L M McKee is visiting relatives in Greenville this week, staying with family and attending local gatherings.
Cameron and surrounding areas will welcome the First Monday Dollar Day beginning August 6. The Trades Development Committee of the Chamber of Commerce voted to set the first Monday of each month for bargains and savings, with merchants urged to back the project and offer unusual values to boost local commerce.
General Mark W. Clark, Chief of Army Field Forces and former Fifth Army commander, arrives at Fort Hood on Thursday July 12 to inspect training elements. Born in Madison Barracks New York he entered West Point and earned the rank of general after WWI service.
Cpl and Mrs Fred Mortimer welcome a daughter Karen Ann born at St Edwards Hospital on July 9 weighing six pounds 15 ounces. Both mother and baby are said to be fine and have moved from the hospital to the home of her parents in Minerva. The maternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs D C Richards and great grandmother Mrs L V Richards of Cameron. Paternal grandmother is Mrs Helen Mortimer of Hoyte with great grandmother Mrs Lula Mortimer of Rosebud.
