Important changes extended draft law to 1955 in Texas

Draft law extended to July 1 1955 with 12 points. Men inducted serve 24 months, register at 18, and may be classified IV-F to 1-A. Induction age lowered to 18% with older men prioritized. Conscientious objectors may perform civilian work for 24 months. Reserve service extends six years after discharge. oversea assignment requires four months training. Enlistments may be extended once through the president.

Funeral Held For A L Esse 78 In Cameron

A L Esse aged 78 died after a stroke at the County Home and died in St Edward Hospital on June 30. He was born in Minesota and lived in Texas twenty years, recently in Thorndale and Cameron for two years. Survivors include three children Lloyd Esse San Francisco Earle Esse Chicago and a daughter with a great grandchild. Funeral services were conducted at Green Funeral Home Chapel at 10 00 a m Monday July 2 with Rev John Solomon and burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Lions Club Hosts Annual Ladies Night at Cameron Country Club

The Cameron Lions Club held its Annual Ladies Night on Monday July 2 at 7:30 PM at Cameron Country Club. Guest speaker Cayce Moore humorist and philosopher of Hearne entertained and spoke on the state of Texas after dinner. Barbara Walton sang with Charlotte Collins accompanying. New officers were installed: Herbert Nance president Dean White first vice president Dr Gus Evans Jr second vice president L G Smith third vice president Adolph Winfield secretary-treasurer Dr George Bowman tail twister Bill Arthur lion tamer. Woodrow Lowe outgoing president reviewed club activities and future plans.

Women workers gain broader Social Security eligibility under 1950 amendments per James B. Marley. Children of women workers can receive benefits based on the mother's wage record if she worked before death. stepchildren may qualify. WWII military service credits of 160 dollars per active month apply 1940 to 1947. Additional paths include women as wage earners, wives of retired workers, widows, mothers of under eighteens, and dependent elderly parents. 52 Car Loads Of Tomatoes Shipped At Gause Shed

The Gause tomato shed run by Jack Hogg for A J Tebbe and Sons of San Antonio shipped 52 car loads plus 21 truck loads totaling about 25 000 pounds per truck. The operation employs 68 workers with Mrs Donnie Black as bookkeeper. Highest price paid reached 7 1 lowest 2 current price 3. Plans include future deals with turnips in November and 50 60 acres of mildew resistant cantaloupes shipped by rail next year.

Milton F. Brown Jr becomes owner and publisher of the Cameron Herald and Daily Midget on July 1 after moving from Lamesa. His background includes advertising work, military service, and education in Texas and New Mexico. The Herald, established 1860, has a long local history and community role in Milam County.

Milam County to Induct 11 Men for 11th Draft Call

Eleven Milam County residents will be inducted into the armed services on July 11, announced Au gust G Kunz, Milam County Draft Board chairman. They depart July 10 at 1 15 P M from the Milam Hotel to the Dallas Recruiting Station. Names include Ralph Ken Cortes Castula Trevino Jr Leonard Logan Janke Warren Edward McCall Lockie Minnie Wheeler Henry Lee Baker Herbert Mitchell Hubert Mitchell Lester Dean Jackson Fred Daniels and Joe Nathan Franklin. Regulations On OPS No. 7 Begins July 2

Merchants must plainly mark selling prices on items covered by Ceiling Price Regulation 7 starting July 2. OPS Houston district price executive Fred C. Hopkins says more articles are under CPR 7 and extends the sale date to July 31 without OPS acknowledgment of price charts. Stores must post signs that prices are not higher than OPS ceilings. new CPR 7 items include toys and decorations.

Deadline for starting GI Bill training nears for WWII vets

The July 25 deadline applies to most World War II veterans discharged before July 25, 1947. Those discharged after may begin training four years from leaving the service. A veteran must be in training by the cut-off date to continue studies, and mere application by then is not enough. VA notes temporary interruptions may still count as training.

Milam County Farmers Plan Labor Shed Construction

At a Friday night meeting in Cameron farmers from Milam County agreed to build a labor shed near the cotton harvest. The group raised 115 to start, with the Farm Bureau pledging 800 and the Chamber of Commerce 500 toward the project. The shed will be built by contract on city property.

Invincibles Sponsor Big Parade in Cameron Milam County

A mass rally of eighteen Vacation Bible School groups gathered at First Baptist Church in Cameron on Thursday July 5 at 2 30 pm with four to five hundred children. They sang, heard Rev Ralph Powell trumpet and musical saw, and learned about school activities. A parade formed along West Main concluding at Courthouse Square led by a fire truck and police car.

Milam County Home Demonstration Agent Mrs Bertie Alford concludes a term with thanks for support during the 4 H and home demonstration work. At the State 4 H Round Up in College Station Milam's Bette Lee Graham reached the final Dress Revue, while delegates Billie Swanzy and Berniece Fischer attended with adult leader Mrs Edwin Fischer. The event themed World Understanding featured international flags and activities.
