Battery C 649th Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion reports nine new guardsmen sworn in during the Armory drill period, the largest enlistment in the unit. One applicant’s papers were not complete and will enlist later. Names include Powell Walston Angell Weathersby Nabours Brady Barkemeyer Youngblood Eubanks Marak Boecker and Capt Terry swore them in. Most are local students, with two living in Rockdale. others from Cameron and nearby areas.

J D Martin of Maysfield died January 21 at his home near Maysfield. Funeral services were held January 23 at Little River Baptist Church with Rev. J M West officiating. Burial followed at Little River Cemetery. Survivors include two sons Elbert Martin of Houston and J D Martin Jr of Maysfield, daughter Lizzie Beth Coleman of El Campo, and four grandchildren.

District Director R. L. Phinney announced February 1 is the deadline for farmers who did not file estimated 1958 returns to submit final income tax returns and pay due taxes. Carlos Smith Remains in Critical Condition After Head On Crash
Cameron resident Carlos Ray Smith is in critical condition at Johns Clinic in Taylor after a head-on collision on US 79 near Bushy Creek bridge Monday at about 10 am. Also seriously hurt were John Macha of Rockdale and Jesse Thomas 77 of Cameron. Officers Otis Hilderbrand and John Blanasit investigated the crash involving a Pontiac driven by Machn and a Chevrolet pickup driven by Smith. Thomas was a passenger. Both vehicles were destroyed and transported to Taylor Hospital.

Buckholts R. O. T. C. Cadet Hurt In Accident
Dudley Wall of San Marcos, visiting parents at their Buckholts stock farm, accidentally shot himself in the forearm with a .22 rifle during a rabbit hunt. He was taken to St. Edward Hospital where surgery removed bullet fragments and he will stay for treatment to avoid infection.

Wreck at crossing injures several Buckholta men
A Friday afternoon collision at a mile north of FE helts crossing involved seven men in a tractor trailer and automobile. W. D. Porter suffered nine broken ribs. Two early Monday crashes on Texas Highway 36 near Cameron
At 4:15 a.m. on Highway 36 four miles east of Cameron a Pontiac driven by Charles Glenn Darnell of Ft. Hood overturned after nearly missing a semi-trailer that had already wrecked at 12:30 a.m. Local patrolmen Otis Hilderbrand and John Blansit reported the incidents.
