The Mothers of Cameron collected about 1125 dollars Friday night for the 1954 March of Dimes drive. Mrs. Bill Burns chaired with captains and lieutenants leading dozens of Cameron mothers who shopped and gathered funds during a single hour, reflecting strong local support and the motto Give More In 54.
The social security representative will be in Cameron Texas on Tuesday February 9 1954 at 1 00 p m. The Austin office of the Social Security Administration offers this community service for local residents contact at the Department of Public Welfare for details.
Mor ris Spriggs was denied a motion for a new trial by Milam County Judge O D Graham after a hearing held January 28. Spriggs, convicted in November 1953 of murder with malice and given a life sentence, alleged jury outside-record considerations and errors in testimony and jury charges. Attorney Jack Prescott said appeal likely.
Health Unit personnel aided by the County School Nurse completed the immunization series in Cameron Schools. No new groups started due to Christmas holidays. About seventy Cameron citizens were examined by Dr. H. C. Leone and staff through December 18, with early exams in the Scott and White Clinic in Temple.
Milam County residents eighteen in January registered with Local Draft Board No. 92 under the Selective Service System. Twenty-five names appear including Billy Wayne Angell Cameron Love Jimmie Lee, Thorndale Black Tom Junior Rockdale, and others from Cameron, Rockdale, Buckholts, Pettibone, and Branchville. Seven men receive induction notices to report March 16 with calls extending to those aged twenty and older.
The nations 3 060 000 Cub Scouts Boy Scouts Explorers and leaders will mark the 44th anniversary of the organization during Boy Scout Week February 7 through 13. The theme is Forward on Liberty s Team highlighting volunteer leaders and 89 000 units nationwide and abroad. The movement began with incorporation in Washington D C on February 8 1910.
Miss Ph D Denson, a student at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, is visiting her parents and friends in Cameron during her mid term leave.
The Maysfield community held a 42 party at Maysfield school raising 115.98 for the 1954 March of Dimes Drive. Cookies and sandwiches were served by local church ladies, Vaughan Th 42, and about ten tables donated. County School Supt. Hinton Pruett attended and spoke on polio.

The Rev. Burton Smith of St. John's Methodist Church Rockdale was named Milam county chairman of the 1954 Red Cross Membership and Funds Campaign set for March. Milam County Chapter aims for 1700 members, a 33 percent rise, with a county fund goal of 7974. Sixty two point nine percent stays for local needs, 37.1 percent to National Red Cross, and twelve point five percent covers overhead.
Walter White, County Tax Assessor-Collector, announced that 5,095 poll taxes were paid by 12 midnight Sunday in Cameron and the Rockdale and Thorndale sub stations. The tally shows 32 exemptions and 5 aliens issued, exceeding 1953 and 1952 figures.
Cameron Chamber of Commerce announces nomination blanks for the McCullin Civic Award are available at the chamber office. Each year the award honors a Cameron citizen for unselfish service. The loving cup remains with the recipient until next year. Nominations close February 15, 1954.
Milam County Farm Bureau announces a Junior Swine Program for Milam County youths. Eligible entrants must be Milam residents with a parent or guardian who is a Farm Bureau member. Prizes total 50 dollars with awards for best gift, heaviest litter, and weight, plus tie prizes. Robert Jungmann chairs the Swine Committee with Bruce Lindsey and Joe J Zajicek assisting. Entry help available at the Farm Bureau office via Lenora A. Bickett. Names drawn February 18 during annual day at Simon-George Memorial Hall with a basket dinner and all invited.
The Cameron Chamber of Commerce will elect eight directors for a three year term. A ballot with about 195 names was released. Members must circle eight choices and return ballots to the Chamber office by February 5, 1954. Directors who have served three consecutive years are ineligible for re-election.
Texas Farm Bureau leaders join regional meeting in Atlanta February 4 5 with Allan Kline and other American Farm Bureau Federation officers. Discussions focus on foreign economic policies trade agricultural policy budget taxes natural resources and labor regulations. Texans include President J Walter Hammond Vice President C H DeVaney and director S W Shep McClaren.
Rev. John Solomon of First Presbyterian and March of Dimes Drive chairman announced the local fund campaign will run through February 8. He noted late placement of MOD containers delayed pickups and asks anyone missed to donate next week or contact him. Cameron contributed 1785.75 last Friday night.
Mrs J P Werner died in St Joseph Hospital early Saturday after a two week stay. Survived by husband J P Werner of Cameron and son Paul Werner of Houston. Body at Earthman Funeral Home with funeral at 9 a m Monday February 1 at St Ann's Catholic Cemetery Houston. Rosary Sunday evening at the funeral chapel.
A new 8500 foot wildcat was scheduled to be drilled by Milam Drilling Corp of Dallas and R E Smith of Houston at the No 1 T S Henderson Estate near Hanover. A McConnell Drilling Company crew prepared to spud the well as early as Sunday or Monday, about a mile north of the D H Byrd No 1 Lucinda Greene discovery, Milam County’s first major producer. The well lies 467 ft from the lease south line and 1,200 ft from Samuel Jones Survey lines.
Mr and Mrs Charlie G lorl ica and Frances Horlica made a business trip to Dallas recently. On their return trip they visited friends and relatives in Ennis.
Milam County citizens may file to place their names on the ballot with Democratic Chairman Max McClaren. The deadline is Monday May 3 1954. Applications are mailed to current officeholders and available at the County Clerk Homer Nabours office in Cameron. A postcard request will be sent to the chairman for an application. First primary is July 24 and the August primary July 28. No filings yet, though a few have announced their candidacy.
Central Texas soil conservation district supervisors and leaders convened in Temple to approve a 12 point work program for 1954. The plan covers annual reporting, district rally day, and committee assignments to pursue projects, including a play to honor a nonresident farmer or rancher for his soil and water efforts.
The Rotary Club staged a successful football banquet Thursday night in the Simon George Memorial Hall with about 300 attendees. Hinton Pruett Milam County School Supt and Rotary president served as toastmaster and welcomed guests. W T Hanes Cameron Public Schools superintendent delivered the response. A musical program by the Rotary Ramblers followed, with the Rotary orchestra partially listed on the last page.
Funeral services for Mrs Louise Sedlemeyer Hogan aged 73 were held Monday February 1 at St Monica’s Catholic Church with Rev Father George J Duda officiating. Burial followed at St Monica’s Cemetery. Rosary was recited Sunday night January 31 at Marek Burns Funeral Chapel. She lived in Cameron since December 19 1953 and died Friday January 20 after a year of declining health. She is survived by her sister Mrs Fahrendorf.
About 340 members and guests attended the Business & Professional Women's club Monday night for a Mexican supper featuring tamales chili teed chili textees hot coffee and homemade pies. Lenora Bickett finance chair and the arrangement committee organized the event.
Buckholts closes the 1954 March of Dimes drive with a total of 312.15. Harold Fuchs, Buckholts chairman, notes 85 percent from events and collections across P T A, schools, communities, and local groups. Key contributors include Marching Mothers divisions led by Mrs. Irene Thornton and Mrs. Delphin Schiller, plus church and community teams.
