Club Committee Urges Funds To Improve Roads

The Commercial Club pledges support for a 1930 road program to connect Cameron with state highways, widen and straighten flood-damaged routes, build two-way Elm and Sandy Creek bridges, and concrete roadways. It urges citizen contributions to fund maintenance and extensions, noting praise for Commissioner N. H. Butts and urging continued aid from County authorities and the public.

Cameron plant to resume cheese making in 1928

The American Milk Products Co plans to restart cheese manufacture at its Cameron plant beginning February 1 under Dr. Kirk of Valley Mills, with J. C. Tucker and P. C. Colgin guiding operations. Kirk, a Kraft veteran, led Valley Mills’ plant, and plans include new milk routes and dairy guidance for local farmers.

Laurel E Purdue Buried in Cameron After Houston Death

Funeral services for Laurel E Purdue were held at 10 a m from Henry Hefley’s home with Rev C A Lehmberg of the First Methodist Church in charge. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery with Green Brothers handling arrangements. Purdue born December 10 1874 in Kansas came to Oklahoma, married Pickie Hefley in Cameron, and died January 17 1930 in Houston after long illness and widow loss in 1928.

Baylor Male Quartet To Sing Heaven Theme Sunday

The Baylor University Male Quartet will present a program at the First Baptist Church Sunday night with a Long Sermon titled Heaven. The group features Dudley Oldham, Charles South, William Bryan, Horace Pool, and Guy Wood with piano. The program includes hymns, scripture, prayers, and multiple quartet numbers such as One Sweetly Solemn Thought and Tell Mother Ill Be There.

City Primary Election Set For February 4 1930

The city primary election will be held on Tuesday February 4 1930. S. M. Burns chairman of the local democratic committee issued the notice. Interest centers on the City Marshal race where three candidates announced. Dan Tyson tax assessor and collector seeks re election. Voters will elect a Mayor City Secretary Treasurer and Aldermen along with City Attorney Marshal and Collector.

Rev E S Hutcherson pastor of First Baptist church named director of District 15 covering twelve Central Texas counties by the Budget Promotion Committee to enlist churches in the budget plan. He will hold conferences in each county with Milam and Bell holding a joint meeting at Bartlett on Monday February 3.

Wm Cobb, secretary of the Cameron Commercial Club and former publisher of the Cameron Enterprise, returns to Cameron from Mission in the Rio Grande Valley where he recently bought the Mission Enterprise. Moulton Cobb oversees the Mission paper. the Cobb family now owns and will publish it.

Guy Wiese a Wichita Falls based Dodge mechanic has joined Sapp Motor Co in Cameron and now heads the mechanical department. He formerly led the shop at McWail Brothers Dodge dealers in Wichita Falls and brings extensive experience to the post.

Aunt Mandy Farmer Appeals For Aid In Milam County Court

Mandy Farmer, a former enslaved woman, testified before the Milam County Commissioners Court seeking relief. She recalled her loyal service to her former masters and asked for wood and food, noting her son’s institutionalization, and the court members showed compassion in response.

George W. Sledge dead after long illness in Cameron

George W. Sledge, 69, a pioneering Black resident and longtime leader in Milam County, Texas, died at his Cameron home on January 16, 1930 after a series of strokes. A Republican leader and former county party chairman, he was mourned by both Black and white communities. Funeral services were held January 20 at Cameron Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by his widow.

Kemp's Cameron Drilled Wildcat Brings 1000 BPD Near Taylor

Revelations of a new oil discovery on the E I Chapman lease in Williamson county near Taylor show a wildcat well drilled by Jim Kemp and associates from Dallas producing about 1000 barrels a day. The find opens a new Texas field in Milam county's fault, with speculation of a large future play and booming acreage prices reaching up to 2000 dollars per acre.
