Two New Deep Wells Contracted in Milam County Field

Contracts awarded to J. W. Spongers and associates of Dallas for two deep wells near the Milam county line follow the Abbott No. 1 discovery. A. N. Green of Green Lame Company announced large timber and material orders for 112 foot derricks, signaling rapid drilling development. Jim Kemp, Cameron resident and Mexia field veteran, drilled the Abbott No. 1 which has produced about 1500 barrels under restraint for over 12 days.

Lions Club adopts Civic Program for 1930

The Lions Club approved a six point civic program for 1930 including safety campaigns removal of courthouse lawn buildings yard beautification publicity for Cameron and railing improvements on the Little River bottom trestle. President J C Martin urged stamping a Friendly City slogan with a 100000 stamp purchase. John C Young led the program with six endorsed items and committees to be named.

Whippet Becomes World’s Lowest Priced Sedan

Wilkerson Brothers in Cameron announce 1930 Whippet four cylinder price cuts of 45 and 50 dollars via telegram from Toledo. The sedan now lists 585 f o b Toledo and 723 delivered in Cameron, signaling a market move toward economy in low priced cars. The new Whippet is on display at Wilkerson Brothers showrooms.

Highway 44 May Be Topped 10 Cameron

Mayor E A Camp says Highway 44 likely topped between Rockdale and Cameron soon. State to fund the surfacing if county straightens two road crooks, one near Head Caldwell in Rockdale and a bend around Minerva, routing through the railroad right of way beyond Cooper Hollow. Rockdale will handle the Rockdale end. Minerva route approval expected. Road would reach Waco and onward to Dallas and Ft Worth.

Legionaires Meet in Cameron February Fourth Evening

The Edwin Hardy Post No. 9 of the American Legion holds its regular meeting at Ada Henderson school gymnasium Tuesday night February 4 at 7 50. Ex servicemen are urged to attend for a program featuring Dr M W Sherwood on Rehabilitation and acts by the Boy Scout orchestra violin solo reading and piano numbers with a full program planned.

C. E. McGregor the longtime chief clerk of the Texas Power and Light local office is transferred to Athens to serve as chief clerk for that district. Bassett Watson succeeds McGregor at Cameron after a two year rise in the company's service.

Rev Clyde Yarbrough Seriously Ill in Fort Worth

Word reached Cameron of the serious pneumonia illness of Rev Clyde Yarbrough at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. A Yee High School graduate and ministry student, he preached Cameron’s commencement last year and served as pastor of the Christian church for a time. his father left for Fort Worth Wednesday.

City Primary Election Set for Tuesday February 4

Cameron voters head to the polls February 4 to nominate city officers in the Democratic primary. Focus centers on the City Marshal race with three candidates: B Slocomb, Gene Smith, and George Richards. Other offices show no opposition. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. with about 1200 expected to vote.

Grover H. Albert special agent for the Department of Commerce Bureau of Statistics issues the Milam county cotton report for 1929. 39 729 bales were ginned by January 16, 1929 versus 68 014 bales ginned by January 16, 1928.

Milam County Rural School Aid Edges on Ruling Impacts 22 Schools

Twenty two Milam county rural schools now receive state aid from the rural school fund and face reduced operations after Judge Minor's injunction. The decision may curtail full terms and affect three bus lines and transferring students. An inspection by state officials was postponed due to lack of funds, with prospects uncertain and awaiting legislative relief.

A rear fire at the Levy dry goods store in Cameron last week, caused by defective wiring, damaged goods stored near the blaze and damaged the building. Loss is covered by insurance.

JIM KEMP LAID TEXAS OIL FIELD PIONEER IN CAMERON

Jim Kemp former Cameron resident for ten years is credited with opening Texas newest oil field in Williamson county. He also developed Abbott No 1 well near Taylor producing about 1500 barrels daily under restraint and helped build Mexia and Milam county oil ventures. His career spans several Southwest fields.

Baylor Glee Club to Perform in Cameron February 5

Baylor University’s Men’s Glee Club directed by Professor Robert Hopkins will give a Cameron concert on Monday February 5. Rudolph Caffey reports the program features many a cappella pieces, varied from light love lyrics to Russian and Latin chants, with solos by Hopkins and quartet performances by the Varsity Quartette and Baylor Golden Wave.

Thieves Loot Vault at Yoe High School

Thieves robbed the Yoe High School building shortly after midnight. They forced open the superintendent’s office door with a crowbar and rifled the vault and desk. They also took pencil machines from the library and other items. Sheriff’s deputies investigate with few clues.

Oil Well Struck in Williamson County Scarce Storage As Efforts Mounted

Abbott No 1 Southeast of Taylor in Williamson County began flowing two weeks ago. Jim Kemp of Cameron reports 1500 to 2000 barrels daily with crews salvaging oil as a hastily built creekbed reservoir holds supply. A large hillside tank is planned and casing delays loom due to weather and snow.
