Cameron businessman and Chamber of Commerce president Cameron Leland Green Sr. files for mayor ahead of the February 3 1942 city primary. He cites a desire to serve during a critical time and notes support from friends across Cameron for his record and plan.
The Civil Service Commission invites applications for Student Trainees in the Signal Air Corps at San Antonio ages 16 to 50 open to men and women with a preference for women. Examinations are every two weeks at local post offices with pay 1020 for inexperienced and 1440 for experienced applicants. Also seeking Mechanic Learners 16 to 25 and Border Patrolmen Deputy Marshals and Departmental Guards at Washington. Go to your post office to obtain applications.
Chevrolet Motor Company assured dealers that parts will be available during the war for repairs and replacements on cars and trucks. R. G. Grabein attended a zone meeting called by K. M. Chase to learn of the plan to insure parts and aid for dealers. He welcomed the announcement as it would provide ample parts amid wartime restrictions. John Williams of Hoyte conducted business in Cameron on Saturday.
Elouise Duncan Petty died in a Harlingen hospital at 3 30 a m on January 11 1942 after ingesting Lysol. Born November 15 1922 in Rockdale Milam County she was a Cameron Schools student who moved to Harlingen in 1940. Survived by husband D B Patty mother Annie Duncan sister Hazel Duncan Hess and brothers Curtis E Duncan and Charles Duncan Jr burial was in Comb Cemetery with pallbearers Coy Baker Pennecall Tom Carson Wendal Ries Burnie Peard and Louis Lotspeich.
J. W. Garner of Rockdale was a Cameron business visitor Friday, spending the day meeting with local firms and exploring potential commerce opportunities.
Congressman W R Poage sent a telegram and letter to Leland Green president of the Chamber of Commerce accepting an invitation to speak at the annual banquet. He cautions that official duties may prevent his attendance. Green voiced disappointment over Washington seeking Cameron’s air field project after local preparations and spending. Poage is expected to bring a hopeful outlook.
Arson is suspected in a large barn fire at the Jos Slavik farm in Marak on Friday night. The blaze destroyed the barn, livestock, and a large chicken flock while the Slavik family was away. Loss is estimated around 4000 dollars with little insurance as authorities investigate.
W. C. Wallace, Cameron city attorney, will not run again. He leaves Cameron January 22 to report for active duty after being called back to the Army. he resigns as president of the Milam County Bar Association. He says he will always be grateful for the public trust and support he received.
Funeral services for George Otho Sanford age 69 were held at 2 30 p m Monday at the Baptist Church in Marlow with Rev C C Acrey conducting. He died at his son Lloyd Sanford’s home in Marlow Monday at 11 p m He was born in Guthrie Kentucky and moved to Milam county six years ago to live with his son in Marlow He is survived by his widow Mrs Otho Sanford of Belle West Virginia and four sons Lloyd Sanford Marlow Luther Sanford Belle West Virginia Eugene Sanford Belle West Virginia and Owen Sanford Springfield Tennessee Interment followed at Marlow Cemetery with Coleman Funeral Home in charge
Mrs Mamie Brown accidentally fell in Waco during the Episcopal Convention and was brought to Cameron Hospital where she is improving. Her sister Mrs J P Love, once ill with a severe cold, is now much improved and able to go out.
Nine in the car were involved when a vehicle driven by Albert Towns of Georgetown struck a concrete bridge on Highway 53 near Rosebud around midnight Saturday. Four died and five were seriously hurt. bodies and injured were taken to Temple. Identifications were incomplete including W. H. Hampton of Brady Buck Pittman of DeLeon and two unidentified girls. Other occupants named Olga Bozon of Jarrell Mr Turner and Ray Thomas of Georgetown.
Milam County plans a 30 minute blackout from 8 to 8:30 PM Monday January 26 as ordered by the Defense Council. Emory B. Camp said verification with Governor Stevenson’s office is ongoing and Cameron will use a three signal fire alarm to start and end the blackout.
Twenty three members met January 21 at the Red Cross Sewing Room from 2 p m to 5 p m and cut and finished twenty one garments. The next meeting is scheduled February 4 at Mrs Pete Mikula's home with Mrs Frank Michalka as co host.
Cameron assessor and tax collector W. H. Stafford runs for re election without opposition in the City Primary on February. He cites an efficient record audited as correct by certified public accountants and notes his deep roots in Cameron and familiarity with property values. He asks for voters support and gratitude for public confidence.
American bombing planes sank a Japanese cruiser and a large supply ship in the latest strikes on Japanese naval power. Over the past 24 hours 24 Japanese planes were shot down as U S forces intensify their campaign. a correspondent aboard a U S warship reports success against enemy targets.
John Wallace Frank Richter Jr and Elisa Kraja reported to Shep herd for service in the United States Air Corps. Billy Batte Bryan reported to Kelly Field and Bill Wallace to Brownwood.
Mr and Mrs James Bass of Austin were guests of Judge and Mrs John Watson on Wednesday Mrs Bass formerly served as Post Mistress here and has many Cameron friends who welcomed her return visits They were accompanied by Fritz Williams of Austin.
Mayor Chas C Smith announces re election campaign citing Cameron’s strong finances. He credits balanced budgets lower taxes and no borrowing while touting street sewer and school improvements and plans to bring a Cameron air field with council harmony in a national emergency. He appeals for votes and broad support for another term.
Japanese troops have breached British defenses off Singapore and may trap the fortress. The invaders press ahead due to superior numbers as Allied efforts to reinforce remain limited. American airmen report growing front-line strength in the Dutch East Indies and Malaya.
A government source reports 200000 Japanese troops including the Fourteenth Army pressing against General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines. MacArthur is said to command about 20000 Allied troops with little prospect of relief from Washington as Japanese forces threaten the area and Singapore.
Two Cameron Theatres will operate next Monday night despite blackout conditions. Lights will be off outside while shows continue inside. Mr Swift fully cooperates and will provide entertainment for patrons during the blackout.
Harvey Williams 31 a Postal Clerk from Corpus Christi died in a local hospital at 7 10 PM Tuesday from injuries after a car crash near Milano at 5 PM Tuesday Lee Howell Rockdale was critically injured and gravely ill Wednesday morning at Cameron Hospital The wreck occurred when Williams driven car struck a gravel truck driven by Howell They were taken to the local hospital by ambulance from Rockdale Williams body to Mexia for interment Deputy Sheriff Carl Black investigated the scene and hospital overnight for facts
