Civil Service Seeks Student Trainees and Guards

The Civil Service Commission invites applications for Student Trainees in the Signal Air Corps at San Antonio ages 16 to 50 open to men and women with a preference for women. Examinations are every two weeks at local post offices with pay 1020 for inexperienced and 1440 for experienced applicants. Also seeking Mechanic Learners 16 to 25 and Border Patrolmen Deputy Marshals and Departmental Guards at Washington. Go to your post office to obtain applications.

Chevrolet Dealers Meet in Houston for War Part Supplies

Chevrolet Motor Company assured dealers that parts will be available during the war for repairs and replacements on cars and trucks. R. G. Grabein attended a zone meeting called by K. M. Chase to learn of the plan to insure parts and aid for dealers. He welcomed the announcement as it would provide ample parts amid wartime restrictions. John Williams of Hoyte conducted business in Cameron on Saturday.

Former Harlingen resident Elouise Duncan Petty dies aged 19

Elouise Duncan Petty died in a Harlingen hospital at 3 30 a m on January 11 1942 after ingesting Lysol. Born November 15 1922 in Rockdale Milam County she was a Cameron Schools student who moved to Harlingen in 1940. Survived by husband D B Patty mother Annie Duncan sister Hazel Duncan Hess and brothers Curtis E Duncan and Charles Duncan Jr burial was in Comb Cemetery with pallbearers Coy Baker Pennecall Tom Carson Wendal Ries Burnie Peard and Louis Lotspeich.

Poage Accepts Banquet Speaker Invitation

Congressman W R Poage sent a telegram and letter to Leland Green president of the Chamber of Commerce accepting an invitation to speak at the annual banquet. He cautions that official duties may prevent his attendance. Green voiced disappointment over Washington seeking Cameron’s air field project after local preparations and spending. Arson Suspected in Big Barn Fire on Jos Slavik Farm

Arson is suspected in a large barn fire at the Jos Slavik farm in Marak on Friday night. The blaze destroyed the barn, livestock, and a large chicken flock while the Slavik family was away. Loss is estimated around 4000 dollars with little insurance as authorities investigate.

W. C. Wallace, Cameron city attorney, will not run again. He leaves Cameron January 22 to report for active duty after being called back to the Army. he resigns as president of the Milam County Bar Association. He says he will always be grateful for the public trust and support he received.

Sanford dies at Marlow Monday

Funeral services for George Otho Sanford age 69 were held at 2 30 p m Monday at the Baptist Church in Marlow with Rev C C Acrey conducting. He died at his son Lloyd Sanford’s home in Marlow Monday at 11 p m He was born in Guthrie Kentucky and moved to Milam county six years ago to live with his son in Marlow He is survived by his widow Mrs Otho Sanford of Belle West Virginia and four sons Lloyd Sanford Marlow Luther Sanford Belle West Virginia Eugene Sanford Belle West Virginia and Owen Sanford Springfield Tennessee Interment followed at Marlow Cemetery with Coleman Funeral Home in charge

Mrs Mamie Brown Involved in Waco Fall At Convention

Mrs Mamie Brown accidentally fell in Waco during the Episcopal Convention and was brought to Cameron Hospital where she is improving. Her sister Mrs J P Love, once ill with a severe cold, is now much improved and able to go out.

Four Dead in Rosebud Car Crash Near Zabikville

Nine in the car were involved when a vehicle driven by Albert Towns of Georgetown struck a concrete bridge on Highway 53 near Rosebud around midnight Saturday. Four died and five were seriously hurt. bodies and injured were taken to Temple. Identifications were incomplete including W. H. Hampton of Brady Buck Pittman of DeLeon and two unidentified girls. Other occupants named Olga Bozon of Jarrell Mr Turner and Ray Thomas of Georgetown.

Milam County Sets January 26 Blackout Window

Milam County plans a 30 minute blackout from 8 to 8:30 PM Monday January 26 as ordered by the Defense Council. Emory B. Camp said verification with Governor Stevenson’s office is ongoing and Cameron will use a three signal fire alarm to start and end the blackout.

St Rita's Circle Meets at Red Cross to Make Garments

Twenty three members met January 21 at the Red Cross Sewing Room from 2 p m to 5 p m and cut and finished twenty one garments. The next meeting is scheduled February 4 at Mrs Pete Mikula's home with Mrs Frank Michalka as co host.
