Cameron Little League officials say about 900 dollars more is needed to finish the Milam Institute Grounds diamond park. To date 2404 dollars has been collected for lights backstop bleachers and equipment, with donations welcome to Cameron Texas.

Council Approves Sewerline Survey and Park Lights

The City Council approved a $1,000 budget for ballpark lights and a $1,000 contract with Marvin Turner Associates for a comprehensive Cameron sewerline survey. Mayor Bassel Wilson will not seek re election. They also budgeted $800 for North Travis paving, rejected a $500 used car lot lease, and approved $3,060.66 for a city grader overhaul.

Junior Livestock Show Awards Five Hundred Dollars

About 100 entries are expected in Cameron's annual Junior Livestock Show with prizes totaling 500 dollars across beef dairy and swine. Judging begins at 1 p m Saturday led by judges Harold Franke H D Maxwell and J F White with public viewing at 10 a m and an amateur judging contest at 11 a m on South Fannin Street by McLane Wholesale Co.

Welfare Dept Grants Preliminary OK for Newton Memorial Hospital

The Department of Health education and Welfare preliminarily approves a 160000 loan for Newton Memorial Hospital Cameron as part of a 320000 project. The Hill Burton grant of 160000 requires a matching fund and a site before funds are released. T. G. Raymond reports the Austin approval and notes the plan replaces the existing hospital with a 25 bed general facility.

Milam Dems File More Candidates for May Primary

Milam County Democratic chairman Max McClaren reports two more filed for the May 7 primary and one new candidate announced. Byron Neal seeks re election as Precinct 3 commissioner and Sen Jarrard Secrest runs for re election in Milam Bell and McClennan counties. W C Wallace announces for district judge to challenge incumbent county attorney Robert C Nelson who will retire to run for the judgeship. Neal’s filing makes a contest for Precinct 3. J B Earle filed for county superintendent. Gene Kirk and J M Terry Sr filed for Precinct 1 constable. Deadline is February 1. A total of 18 candidates have filed, including W R Poage Herman Yezak Carl Black Walter White C R Raney Jack Prescott Roy C Archer and five constables: Gifford Thweatt Ollie Cook George Gamble John Zajicek Herman Dorner.

Board Accepts 2 Resignations at Cameron ISD Meeting

Supt. Wiley Loughmiller and VHS head football coach Jim Speer submitted resignations that were accepted at the regular meeting. Speer asked for release from duties when his contract ends next spring. Loughmiller will stay until June 30 and praised nine years as Cameron’s superintendent. The board named committees to screen candidates for both vacancies and set April 2 for a potential school board election.

Cameron mayoral race opens as Duncum files to run

Cameron businessman Coleman Duncum filed as a candidate for city mayor. Mayor Bassel Wilson announced he will not seek re election, leaving the field to other contenders. The April 1960 city election will include the mayor and three council seats with filing due by March 5. Duncum, 44, a local auto agency operator, has long civic ties and previously sought a council seat won by Sam Houston in 1958. Wilson urged continued street improvements before the election.

Judge Graham Ends Milam County District Judge Run

Milam County District Judge O D Graham says he will not seek re election in the 1960 May primary. The veteran jurist who has served since 1951 retires leaving the post open to Robert C Nelson milam County attorney and W C Wallace Cameron attorney and city judge who announced his candidacy Wednesday.

Blood program meeting set for January 27 in Rockdale

Civic leaders and the public are invited to an organizational meeting of the Milam Red Cross blood program at 7 30 p m January 27 in Rockdale Junior High Cafetorium. Officials note the county maintains a quota of 70 pints per bloodmobile visit.
