Milam County Democratic Committee chairman Max McClaren reports sixteen candidates filed for the Milam Democratic primary set for May 7. He notes eleven candidates had already entered the race.
An odd obituary notes thousands of Christmas cards died last December 25 at the Post Office with burial in a waste paper basket. The piece praises hobbies in Cameron and Milam, from clock repair to archery, inviting readers to share hobby stories. Official filings include Nelson for district judge, Prescott for county attorney, and several precinct constable candidates with May primary races.
Milano County reports a new wildcat well by General Crude on the Perry land about six miles south of Milano. The test is drilling below 6 100 feet with permit to 8 000 feet. one half mile southeast of the earlier No 1 P. H. Perry abandoned in 1958 after reaching 12 700 feet. The Perry lease block spans 10 000 acres near the Burleson County line.
In Buckholts Water Control and Improvement District No 1 three directors were elected Tuesday. Fred Gresak Frank Tomascik and Adolph Gresak won the seats as ballots showed Gresak 22 Tomascik 24 Adolph Gresak 20 with four other candidates receiving lower totals. Tomascik was named president Adolph Gresak vice president and Fred Gresak secretary by a majority vote.
The Cameron building permits for 1960 totaled 92 with a value of 92 236 dollars, similar to 1959’s 92 permits valued at 92 256 dollars. Major projects were scarce in 1959, though 1958 saw the National Guard Armory and other large builds. Pending work includes a service station on US 77. Nearby Rochdale issued about 100 000 in totals.
Fifteen Milam Countians enter stock at the 1960 Houston Fat Stock Show and Rodeo set for February 24 to March 6. The event offers more than 200000 in awards with 160142 for livestock divisions and two scholarships totaling 6200 for outstanding junior exhibitors. Over 11000 entries span 14 cattle breeds, four horse registrations, 11 sheep breeds, Angora goats, six swine breeds, about 20 poultry breeds and nine rabbit breeds. Notable Cameron participants include Jeannette Richter Barbara and Patricia McClaren David and Joannie Ray Richter Henry Tomesek Jr Roy Dean Tomesek Wallace Moody Jr Gene Glaser Douglas Parker Patricia Ann Titsworth Larry Jungmann and Elzie Warwick Jr.
City firemen answered their first call of the New Year when a truck was sent to a small house in the 500 block of East Gillis Street. The blaze started from smoking on a stove and Fire Marshall John Eanes reported the incident. No damage estimate was given though smoke filled the home.
Ben Milam School hosts a six point meeting agenda for the City School Board. Items include purchasing chairs and tables for Ada Henderson and O J Thomas Schools, efforts to buy science reference books, trash pickup plan for Cameron schools, resignation of Richard Jenness, discussion of The Ungraded Primary, and Texas Association of School Boards membership.
Patrolman Bill Cooksey of the Department of Public Safety urged Cameron CYO members to improve driver education and attitudes toward traffic enforcement. He told the group last week that many violations occur from overlooked rules and that fewer traffic deaths would come with better public acceptance of modern traffic control.
Cameron area merchants prepare for the Mall Stock Show on January 23 with a $500 prize pool across swine beef and dairy divisions. The event features a second annual Mall auto and farm equipment display, a county FFA and 4H judging contest, and street closures around the Milam County Courthouse. Judging starts at noon with Texas A&M experts overseeing the competition.
Three speakers discussed literature music and art values at the Cameron PTA cultural arts program. The group approved a two way loudspeaker and a letter condemning pornographic material in Cameron schools while the Miami County chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution offered assistance.
Cameron Knights of Columbus officials completed plans to enlarge the KC Bowling alleys adding four new lanes and eight automatic pinsetters. Construction was set to begin when weather improves, with the eight-lane center to replace the present four lanes in the 1950 building housing a meeting hall.
County officials from Bell Falls Milam and Robertson are invited to a Rosebud meeting Monday at the Brown Library to study a rabies epidemic in the area. Dr. Robert Tittsworth notes five rabid cattle cases in Milam County and warns of transmission risk to humans, while officials consider declaring epidemic conditions and outline preventive steps.
R William Jackson of the Santa Fe in Temple confirms the ICC has deferred review of the discontinuance plan for Trains 5 and 6. The line proposed ending service between Kansas City and Houston with hearings delayed forty days, amid protests from Cameron and other towns.
School officials report Yee High School enrollment at 375 and elementary totals at 789 this week. Superintendent Wiley Loughmiller says Cameron white schools may have the largest enrollment in a decade while noting Yee High School attendance at 98 percent Ada Henderson 95 percent and C. J. Thomas 91 percent in the latest figures.
North Texas State College sponsors about 250 student teachers this semester from Cameron and other areas. Barbara Ann Mondrik and Stephen Franklin Polzer are among them, assigned to high school business in Dallas and physical education in Irving respectively. They work under classroom teachers, with near campus students teaching half days and distant students full time for nine weeks.
Milam area reports continued rain with 1959 rainfall totaling 29.94 inches, about five inches below the 1958 total and average yearly rainfall. Farmers hope for drier spells as grass grows and cattle graze, moisture remains adequate for early spring planting barring a new dry spell.
Milam County National Guard adds Jodie A. Matus to Company C 3rd Medium Tank Battalion. He was sworn in during Sunday drill as Specialist-4. Matus, a former Guardsman, previously served three years on active duty with the Army and now works for Alcoa in Rockdale with his wife and children.
