Texas field crops in 1951 were valued at more than 1.25 billion dollars, the USDA stated, marking the fourth straight year above 1 billion for crops excluding livestock and dairy. Cotton led values with 561.0 million dollars, followed by cotton seed and grain sorghums, while total crop value fell mainly due to reduced production.
Washington reports a formal government move toward nationwide meat rationing with price controls on meats and other foods. A coupon system and licensed slaughterers are planned to curb a past meat black market, with action expected within three months or sooner.

In Austin on Tuesday three Texas Supreme Court justices Will Wilson Robert W Calvert and Meade F Griffin were sworn in for six year terms Calvert having been appointed last September and Griffin serving since April 1949 The Court of Criminal Appeals also welcomed W A Morrison who becomes a sitting judge The court announced Harry N Graves will become presiding judge replacing Frank L Hawkins who retired after 30 years on the bench
The weekly parking meter revenue totaled 268.62 for five days ending December 28, with Monday a holiday. Officers note violators at Court House Square, meters feed a permanent street fund, aiding bond retirements on Highways 36 and 190. The Twin Meter Sales Co funds service inspections, while street work on Highway 190 gains praise.
During the holiday period Texas recorded 51 violent deaths including 30 traffic fatalities and 21 other causes in the New Year travel stretch. California was second with far fewer, while national totals exceeded 380. The Texas DPS in Austin tallied 66 traffic deaths, 44 other accidents, 36 homicides or personal crisis cases.
James Richard Budwell of Temple and Turner Nugent Wadworth were fined 50 dollars each for driving while intoxicated. Both had licenses suspended for six months after pleading guilty in open court.

Lt. Gen. Walton H. Walker, longtime Korean War commander, killed Dec. 23 in Korea, is buried with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery. President Truman posthumously promotes him to four stars. mourners include Gen. George C. Marshall and Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Dallas will host evangelist Billy Graham as part of the 1951 Baptist Evangelistic Conference. Funeral services for Leo Wilkerson 63 of Austin were held at First Baptist Church Cameron with Dr. Blake Smith officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill. Born in Cameron Milam County he was an auto dealer and longtime hotel executive prior to retirement. Surviving are his widow ZoRa Clark Fokes Wilkerson, two daughters, a sister and two granddaughters. Pallbearers included local civic names.
Tommie Thomas and Ted McDonald were recent guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Autis Lott.
Draft headquarters announced that doctors dentists and veterinarians under 50 not yet registered will sign up January 15. Director Hershey estimated about 210000 such professionals must register along with 21000 signed up on October 16. Dr Meiling said 18000 doctors will be needed to expand the military to 3.5 million, with most first priority group already registered or deferred but having served under 90 days.
Killeen Legion Commander Bill Elkins urged Senators Connally and Johnson and Rep Poage to name the Belton dam Walker Dam in honor of the late Gen Walton Walker. Walker, former Eighth Army commander killed in Korea, was Belton native and held in high esteem in Central Texas. The idea follows a 1949 area plan that named the dam for Connally, who declined citing the unwritten rule against naming projects after living officials.
Hubert Smith 47 of Seminole Oklahoma died Sunday afternoon in New Orleans of a heart attack during a family trip for the Sugar Bowl game. A Magnolia Oil Company employee for 20 years, he was born at Jones Prairie Milam County. Funeral set for Friday at Little River Baptist Church with time pending. Survived by wife Hubert, son Jack Edwin of the University of Oklahoma, and three sisters Archie McLerran Cameron Dewey Black Jones Prairie and Alfred Wall Pre mont Texas.
Chinese Communist forces breached the center of the US 24th Division north of Seoul pushing toward the capital on January 3. The 8 mile distance to Seoul prompted evacuation plans as refugees crowded the Han River banks and Allied defenses faced renewed pressure from north and northwest assaults.
